During medieval period of Indian history the historical literature generally consisted of dynastic and regional histories, biographies and memoirs. But the failure to assess and study them with reference to their author's social, cultural and religious backgrounds, methods, forms of expression, concept of history and the like has resulted in an incomplete and distorted picture of the times. The writings of the period bear testimony to the fat that the medieval historians lacked in an understanding of the social and economic forces that bring about vital changes in societies and fall of kingdoms. This volume brings out the trends and methods of the leading historians of medeiaeval India like Kalhan, Barani, Badauni, Khafikhan, we also find that Abul Fazl was the first Indian historian to adopt a rational and secular appraoch to history. He tried to establish a close relationship between history and philosophy and extended the evidential basis of his works by consulting the archival records and other accounts. The study of mediaeval Indian history along modern lines was started by British scholars in the late eighteenth century. Since most of them were administrators, they narrowed down the scope of history to politics and administration mainly relying upon Parsian historical works and European travellers' accounts without any serious effort to analyse, interpret and understand the material. The Indian Scholars initially began the studies of this period along with the lines laid down by Western scholars. However after 1920, they began to adopt new methods of research imbibibg the latest trends in historiography. We have still to realise that the historical works of any age should be studied with reference to the spirit of the age, the social and religious background, the psychology, the habits of thought and technique of the writers. The present volume will enable the reader to have a better insight into the understanding of mediaeval India and will be of interest to all students of Indian history.

In the present work an attempt has been made to give an accurate picture of Tipu Sultan by disengaging his personality from masses of fictions and distortions which have gathered round him. As practically the whole of Tipu's life was taken up with fighting the author has devoted considerable space to campaigns and battles. However he has not ignored other aspects of his career. He has paid sufficient attention to the causes and results of wars while Tipu's relations with the English the French the Nizam the Marathas and the Ottoman Sultan have been fully discussed. The last three chapters of the book have been devoted to a description of the Sultan's Government and army his reforms and religious policy his efforts at industrialisation and state socialism his character his failures and achievements. This pioneering study will enable the reader to appraise the career and character of this extraordinary man. Its scholarly value is enhanced by Professor Hasan's extensive use of English French Persian and Urdu sources. In this revised and enlarged edition Professor Mohibbul Hasan has made a reassessment of the sources and attempted with the help of works hitherto unutilised to make a more detailed study of Tipu and fill in the gaps left out in his earlier work. He has accordingly rewritten a number of chapters made alterations and additions in others and corrected mis statements and removed obscurities which occurred in the first edition. 443 pp.
