EXCERPT: PREFACE - This Self-Test Supplement is primarily intended to accompany J. A. Tierney's Calculus and Analytic Geometry, 3rd Edition, but it can readily be adapted to any first year calculus text. The main purpose of this manual is to provide a large number of ADDITIONAL problems, in multiple-choice format, so that the material covered in a first year calculus course can be self-tested. The book contains over 1150 PROBLEMS WITH ANSWERS. Part A of each chapter consists of TRUE OR FALSE QUESTIONS intended as a quick self-test of the theory presented in that chapter. The student can SELF-TEST, REINFORCE and SELF-EVALUATE his or her understanding of the basics of calculus by the TRUE or FALSE questions in Part A of each chapter. The time spent by the student in doing questions in this format is minimal and the student quickly obtains a true Self-evaluation of his or her understanding of the basics that are tested in that chapter. Part B of each chapter consists of standard calculus questions in a MULTIPLE-CHOICE FORMAT. For each question, the answer is one of FIVE POSSIBLE CHOICES. In our experience with large enrollment 1st year courses, we have found that objective type midterms and finals are extremely effective. The questions in Part B aid the student in familiarizing himself/herself with this type of testing procedure. Irrespective of the testing procedure used in a course, the student will find that the short and concise questions of Part B, will be an excellent source of supplementary self-test problems . . .
