Johannes Monachus, latinisiert Jean Lemoine, war gelehrter Jurist (Kanonist), zeiweilig als Rechtsanwalt tätig, Kardinal, Bischof von Arras und päpstlicher Legat, studierte kanonisches Recht und Theologie in Paris. Im Jahre 1282 war er Auditor an der Rota Romana. Er stand in den Diensten von Papst Bonifatius VIII., dessen Liber Sextus er kommentierte. Die Publikation der Dekretalen im Jahre 1234 verhalf der Kanonistik zu ungeheurem Aufschwung. Während die Legistik nach dem Erstellen der Glossa ordinaria durch Accursius an Schwung erlahmte, entfaltete sich in der Kanonistik eine großartige Kommentierungsphase. Ende des 13. Jahhrunderts war diese Blütezeit kaum abgeschlossen, da sorgte die Publikation des Liber Sextus im Jahre 1298 für eine neue, zweite Blütezeit. Bereits drei Jahre später erschien der erste wichtige Kommentar. Im Jahre 1301 veröffentlichte JOHANNES MONACHUS (Le Moine, Lemoyne) seinen Kommentar zum Liber Sextus. Johannes Monachus stammte aus Frankreich, geboren in einem Dorf in der Diözese Amiens. Sein Studium erfolgte in Paris. Am 30. September 1294 wurde er von Papst Cölestin V. zum Kardinal ernannt. Für Bonifaz VIII. war er in Frankreich als Legat unterwegs. Johannes Monachus starb am 22.August 1313 In Avignon. Die Meinungen über die Bedeutung von Johannes Monachus differieren etwas. Dies liegt vor allem an der zunehmenden Bedeutung des Kommentars von Johannes Andreae, dessen Werk zum Liber sextus fast gleichzeitig mit dem Kommentar von Johannes Monachus erstellt worden ist. Der Jurist des 16. Jahrhunderts allegiert zweifelsohne bevorzugt Johannes Andreae. Dies betrifft aber eine Zeit, in der die Bedeutung des kanonischen Rechts bereits wieder im Sinken begriffen war. In der Zeit nach der Publikation des Liber Sextus, also im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert war Johannes Monachus ein überaus wichtiger Kanonist. Dies nicht nur für den italienisch=frnzösischen Raum. Aus der großen Anzahl der erhaltenen Handschriften (vgl.Schulte II,192 FN 4) kann zweierlei abgelesen werden: die Bedeutung und große Verbreitung des Werkes von Johannes Monachus und zweitens aber auch die Einflußnahme in Deutschland. Denn eine Reihe von Handschriften finden sich in deutschen Bibliotheken wieder. In den Zeiten der Buchdruckerkunst fiel die Bedeutung des Johannes Monachus etwas ab, wie dies, wie oben erwähnt, mit der Kanonistik insgesamt auch eintrat.
