Louis-René de Latouche-Tréville est avant tout un opportuniste. Il sert tous les régimes avec la même ardeur. Familier de Louis XVI, il se fera jacobin sous la Terreur pour finir dans la peau d'un fidèle sujet de Napoléon. Point de préjugés ni d'esprit de caste chez ce franc-maçon ouvert aux Lumières. Ce qui le meut vraiment, c'est un amour sincère de son métier et de sa patrie, mais aussi, parfois, un appétit irrépressible pour le luxe et tous les plaisirs. Après s'être illustré tout au long de la guerre d'Indépendance américaine, Latouche eut l'occasion de tenir par trois fois Nelson en échec. Il fut aussi, au cours d'une vie fertile en rebondissements de toutes natures, chancelier du duc d'Orléans, député de la Constituante et industriel à Montargis. Sa mort prématurée, survenue en août 1804, priva la France d'un amiral qui aurait pu lui épargner le désastre de Trafalgar. Le contre-amiral Rémi Monaque, né en 1936, est entré à l'École navale en 1955. Il a commandé un navire hydrographe et trois bâtiments de combat. Ses principales affectations à terre l'ont conduit à s'intéresser au renseignement, à la stratégie et à la formation des officiers. Auteur d'une histoire de l'École de guerre navale, il a produit de nombreux articles sur la marine du XVIIIe siècle et sur l'histoire de la pensée navale. 15x22 cm. 659 p. Broché. Bon état.
