In the publisher"s original red cloth binding, with gilt and silver stamped sword-and-shield design. First edition. Illustrated with thirty-seven monochrome plates by F. V. Du Mond, including the frontispiece and a decorative border of contents. Collated, complete. Twain"s historical novel on Joan of Arc, presented as the memoir of her page and secretary, "Sieur Louis de Conte," and framed on the title page as a translation from an unpublished French manuscript. Aware of his reputation as a comic writer, Twain requested that each installment be published anonymously so that readers would treat it seriously. Regardless, his authorship soon became known. In the publisher"s original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Slight fading to spine. Very slight shelf lean. One or two very light spots of damp staining to boards. Previous owner's coloured-in pencil ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound, with the exception of the title page which is largely detached, holding at lower gutter only. Pages bright and clean with one or two minor spots and handling marks to fore edge and first and last few leaves. Very Good. book.
