    Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Various including I William Hole, W.D. McKay and John Smart (illustratore). Very rare book. Printed in 1899 for private circulation. A collection of writings, primarily poetry and some prose published by the Monks of St Giles, a quasi-literary club formed in 1852 that has a long tradition of privacy and secrecy. Combining sociability with poetry and prose composition, members adopt monastic names, wear monks' habits and meet for dinners where they read their poems. This copy is a good condition, illustrated hardback. Some marks to hardcover. Signs of wear on spine and edges. Some fading of the gilt lettering and graphic. Discolouration and fading of gilt on page edges. Internal pages mainly clean. Illustrations very good. Penned inscription of what looks like 'Rst Gould' on inside page. Remnants of a price ticket on inside page. Pencil mark dated 11.12.99 on second page.

    Condizione: VG+. First edition. A beautifully bound scarce collection of verse and some prose by members of the Monks of St. Giles. The Monks of St. Giles is a somewhat secretive literary club founded in 1852 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Members are given monastic names affixed to their seats at gatherings.Combining sociability with poetry and prose composition, members meet for dinners where they read their poems. The clubstill exists today and meets at Edinburgh New Club. Every so many years a volume of members' (mostly) poetry contributions--that were initially read aloud at meetings in recent years---are privately published. I can trace the first volume back to 1891. The latest volume I can find is volume 16, published in 2000, covering verse written and read at meetings in the 1990s. Overall Condition: VG+ to NF BOOK INFO Privately Published by the Monks of St. Giles (presumably in Edinburgh). The volumes are not part of a set. Each volume is published independently with new material. Volume I was published in 1891. Volume II was published in 1899. Volumes differ in sizes year-to-year. Bound in contemporary and uniform, fine, crushed full morroco by Henderson & Bisset of Edinburgh. Boards with triple gilt fillet paneling. Spine with raised bands separating compartments ruled in gilt and with gilt lettering. in compartments two and three. All board edges ruled in gilt. Top edge gilt. Turn-ins with gilt dentelles. Marbled paper. Octavos. Volume I is 8" x 6" and Volume II is 9.5" x 6 3/8". Illustrated with woodcut head- and tail-pieces and plates. Thick, high-quality, watermarked paper. Volume I: vii, [3}, 268 pp. Original paper wraps bound in at the back. Volume II: xi, [1], 276, [2] pp. Tipped in plates. Complete. CONDITION REPORT The volumes are VG+ overall. Firm hinges and joints, solidly bound. Colorful, supple leather. Some rubbing to spine and extremities. Corners slightly rubbed/pushed. A few spots of soiling. Pages are clean and bright overall with few signs of handling. Volume I: Externally Near Fine - light rubbing to extremities. Internally: VG. 27 pages toward the front with spotting/foxing. Offsetting from plates. Verso of FFEP with book seller info in pencil and signature stamp of bindery at the foot. Volume II: Externally VG+ with rubbing to extremities and spine. Internally fine. Bright, clean pages with minimal signs of handling. Contemporary fine crushed full morocco.
