Hardcover. late Vindication of the Kirk [1791]. vi, [7]-126 p.; front. (caricature of Presbyterian worship, after Hogarth); 19 cm. Reset from Rotterdam, 1738 edition, with type-facsimile of that title-page and imprint. [First printed in 1692: Wing C6961] -- A `prelatical' diatribe across the board though mainly against Principal Gilbert Rule (1629?-1701): `But passing those Flowers of Presbyterian Eloquence, let us examine in the next Place, if this Author makes amends for his Stile, by the Truth and Reason that he writes. It would be tedious to trace him though every Page, in which his Nonsense, Contradictions, and Falsehoods abound, and therefore I shall here mention only some Generals. Sometimes, if you'll believe him, Cameronians are zealous godly Men, eminent for their Suffering for Christ: By and by, says he, They are a wild, ungoverned, desperate Rabble, rendered mad by Oppression. The Sum of all is, Revenge is a true Presbyterian Vertue, and Contradictions, Mr. Rule's best Way of Reasoning.' (p. [61]) -- Rule, who had earlier done more serious work in opposing Edward Stillingfleet, put out anonymously against this book: A just and modest reproof, in 1693. His reputation as `a true-blue Presbyterian of the old school' (James Walker) endured. -- Sometimes ascribed to Robert Calder (1650?-1723, who may have edited the 1719 edition): so by a former owner of this copy who added Calder's name below the original pseudonym at end of the dedication: Jacob Curate. This owner's signature, and date: 1878, establish the approximate printing date (given in Copac as 1900?) -- With a few pencilled references in text and notes on endpapers. Good spotted cloth, upper corner stained. Title-piece rubbed away.
