Le Danien, premier étage de l'ère Cénozoïque, est associé à la crise Crétacé-Tertiaire (K-T), à la fin des dinosaures non aviens et à l'apparition des premières faunes modernes. C'est donc une période riche d'événements divers et qui suscitent aussi l'intérêt du grand public. En créant cet étage en 1847, Desor a désigné des coupes types très éloignées les unes des autres : Stevns Klint et Faxe au Danemark, Vigny et Laversines dans le bassin de Paris, fait peu courant dans l'histoire de la stratigraphie. Ceci ne pouvait que compliquer les choses, suscitant des discussions qui ont duré près d'un siècle et demi. Ce volume commence par faire le point sur la longue polémique concernant l'âge crétacé ou tertiaire du Danien. Après quoi, l'étude détaillée d'affleurements toujours parcellaires a permis de mieux comprendre ces dépôts et a abouti à une nouvelle vision de la paléogéographie danienne. La partie paléontologie et ses 46 planches vient combler l'absence quasi totale d'iconographie ancienne, ce qui a aussi contribué à alimenter les discussions sur l'âge du Danien. Cette partie est suivie de réflexions portant sur la diversification des organismes au début du Tertiaire et sur la lecture médiatique de la crise K-T, dominée par l'hypothèse de la collision d'un météore. Les relations entre le Danien et l'Homme ainsi que le patrimoine géologique sont valorisés dans deux autres parties. Au final, ce volume donne une vision d'ensemble actualisée du Danien, mais les données inédites qui sont présentées font qu'il dépasse le cadre d'une simple synthèse sur l'étage. Le temps du géologue est divisé en étages définis par les fossiles qu'ils contiennent. Afin d'établir des références universelles, certains sites où les couches géologiques correspondant à ces étages affleurent ont été qualifiés de « stratotypes ». La collection Patrimoine géologique a pour objet de publier des synthèses sur chacun des stratotypes situés en France. The Danian, first stage of the Cenozoic era, is associated with the Cretaceous-Tertiary crisis (K-T), the end of non-avian dinosaurs and the appearance of the first modern fauna. It is therefore a period rich in various events and which also triggered the interest of the general public. Describing this stage in 1847, Desor designated typical locations very far apart: Stevns Klint and Faxe in Denmark, Vigny and Laversines in the Paris Basin, which is uncommon in the history of stratigraphy. This could only complicate matters, sparking discussions that lasted nearly a century and a half. This volume deals with the long-lasting controversy concerning the Cretaceous or Tertiary age of the Danian. After that, the detailed study of still patchy outcrops led to a better understanding of these deposits and resulted in a new vision of the Danish paleogeography. The paleontology part and its 46 plates represent an up to date iconography, which was almost not available so far and which also contributed to fuel the discussions on the age of the Danian. This part is followed by reflections on the diversification of organisms at the beginning of the Tertiary, after the K-T crisis, dominated by the hypothesis of the collision of a meteor. The relations between Danian and Man and the geological heritage are valued in two other parts.
