Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD and 'Published April, 1907'). So it's a double first edition (just kidding). So I think this is an interesting listing. I can't find any information on the author, excepting that he was born in 1856 and died in 1931 and that his wife was also an author. It appears that this is the only book he wrote, and it is a fact that, once listed, this copy will be the Only signed one for sale on the Internet. Much better known was the individual he inscribed the book to: author Julian Street, actually to he and his wife. The inscription reads (in pencil) 'To Mr.+ Mrs. Julian Street (the father and mother of another Peter) with respectful admiration for their (?) table and washstand, and (?) regard for themselves, from ((and here the author crosses out the word 'To' in the dedication which reads 'To Peter's Wife')) and from Winfield S. Moody, Cos Cob 23 May 1909.' Here's a little bit about Julian Street: 'He twice won an O. Henry Award. His short story, Mr. Bisbee's Princess, published in Redbook and anthologized in Great American Short Stories: O. Henry Memorial Prize Winning Stories 1919-1934, won the award in 1925. The story was adapted as the 1926 W.C. Fields silent film, So's Your Old Man. In 1915 he published a book on Theodore Roosevelt, called The Most Interesting American. He is credited with being the art critic who wrote that the painting exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show by Marcel Duchamp called Nude Descending a Staircase, resembled "an explosion in a shingle factory." Street moved to Princeton in the 1920s. The university houses his manuscript collection and a library is named after him there.' So that's all pretty cool. Mr. Street and his wife (and possibly Peter after them) took pretty good care of the book. The interior is in terrific condition. The flowery end papers look very nice. There's an eeny-teeny (apparently that's not a word) loss at the bottom edge of the rear inside cover, and there's a tiny bookseller label next to it (Brentano's Booksellers & Stationers , New York). The top page edge is gray and the middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. I turned over each of the first 165 pages because the pages 5-6 and 7-8 each had a spot of loss on their middle edge, and a few other early pages had a rough cut to them. But, happily, the figured out how to do it better and the rest of the pages were cut much more skillfully. Quite remarkably, the pages are exceptionally clean. I didn't find even one instance of soiling. I scrolled through the remaining pages. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing. There are no markings. No attachments other than the little bookseller label, and the authors signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. There are seven full-page black-and-white illustrations including the frontispiece. They are all in perfect condition. There is no foxing anywhere in the book. The frontispiece is protected by a tissue guard which is in very good condition as well. The title page and verso copyright page have a small nick or indent just off their bottom edge, not much of anything. You can see the covers in the photos. The gilt lettering and design on both the front and spine is nicely bright. There isn't any conspicuous soiling, but there is toning at the margins of the front cover and on the spine. There's also a small area of light rippling below the design on the front. The most significant wear is the slight loss at both spine ends (second photo). The binding of the book is very good. The pages are nicely tight and the covers are nicely tight as well. Inscribed by Author(s).…
