Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. Presumed to be a Book Club edition. [10], 240 pages. Illustrations. Name and address of previous owner on fep. The DJ is price clipped and in a plastic sleeve. A minute by minute account of the final flight of the Nazi airship Hindenburg, which exploded in mi…d-air on May 6, 1937, over Lakehurst, NJ. Michael Macdonald Mooney devoted his life to a clearer understanding of the American culture. He served as senior editor at the SATURDAY EVENING POST, and contributed to HARPER'S, ATLANTIC MONTHLY, and TRAVEL AND LEISURE. He was the author of GEORGE CATLIN: LETTERS AND NOTES ON THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS, and THE HINDENBURG. Derived from a Kirkus review: On May 6, 1937, the German dirigible Hindenburg exploded just prior to landing at Lakehurst, N.J., killing 36 and bringing the shortlived Zeppelin era to a flaming end. Mooney provides an authoritative review of dirigible development from the early 1900's when "Crazy Count" Graf Zeppelin began building an "airborne cavalry horse" to the Lakehurst disaster, but his primary concern is what or who destroyed the Hindenburg: was the big blimp knocked out of the sky by static electricity (as the official inquiry concluded) or blown out by sabotage? (The airship was, after all, one of Hitler's most visible propaganda floats, appearing at the 1936 Olympics prominently displaying the swastika.) Mooney's reconstruction of the voyage utilizes existing documentary files, secondary sources, and fresh interviews with survivors (quite a few were still around). The two Hindenburg-class airships were hydrogen-filled, passenger-carrying rigid airships built in Germany in the 1930s and named in honor of Paul von Hindenburg. They were the last such aircraft to be constructed, and in terms of their length, height, and volume, the largest aircraft ever built. During the 1930s, airships like the Hindenburg class were widely considered the future of air travel, and the lead ship of the class, LZ 129 Hindenburg, established a regular transatlantic service. The airship's destruction in a highly publicized accident was the end of these expectations. The second ship, LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin, was never operated on a regular passenger service, and was scrapped in 1940 along with its namesake predecessor, the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin, by order of Hermann Göring. Hindenburg set out on her first flight to North America for the 1937 season (she had already made one return trip to South America in 1937) on 3 May, bound for New York. This flight would end in tragedy with Hindenburg being utterly consumed by fire as it prepared to dock at NAS Lakehurst in New Jersey. Filled with hydrogen, it caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The accident caused 35 fatalities (13 passengers and 22 crewmen) among the 97 people on board (36 passengers and 61 crewmen), and an additional fatality on the ground. Ten passengers and 16 crewmen died in the crash or in the fire and six other crew members, three passengers, and Allen Hagaman died in the following hours or days, mostly as a result of the burns. The disaster was the subject of newsreel coverage, photographs and Herbert Morrison's recorded radio eyewitness reports from the landing field, which were broadcast the next day. A variety of theories have been put forward for both the cause of ignition and the initial fuel for the ensuing fire. The publicity shattered public confidence in the giant, passenger-carrying rigid airship and marked the abrupt end of the airship era. The site of the Hindenburg crash is at the Lakehurst Naval entity of Joint Base McGuireDixLakehurst. It is marked with a chain-outlined pad and bronze plaque where the airship's gondola landed. It was dedicated on May 6, 1987, the 50th anniversary of the disaster. Hangar No. 1, which still stands, is where the airship was to be housed after landing. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1968. George Wilson (Jacket painting) and Joan Bingham ( (illustratore).
