V for Vendetta was written beginning in 1981 as a response to Thatcherism in the United Kingdom. Its inspiration, Guy Fawkes, allowed Moore to explore themes of political repression and anarchism, unusual topics for comics and graphic novels at the time. "V for Vendetta was an ambitious and even audacious project, formally as well as in terms of its narrative. Fittingly for the subject matter the comic was an example of constrained writing/artwork, as Moore and Lloyd (at the latter's suggestion) set themselves certain conditions in the use of thought bubbles and sound effects.
