Dark burgundy cloth with vibrant gilt stamped lettering to front board and spine; shallow cloth loss at frayed spine heel; scuffing to spine head and board corners. Deckle fore-edge and bottom edge. Front pastedown has past owner's personal bookplate partially overlain on ink signature; some scattered light soiling to interior pages which overall remain clean. Binding has some slight stress points but otherwise firm. A very good- copy. With eight b/w plates (including frontispiece portrait and a facsimile letter) all on unpaged leaves, Preface, Bibliography, and Index. An examination of General Jackson's campaigns against the Creek Indians and the British in the Mississippi Territory during the War of 1812 culminating with the Battle of New Orleans. A well-regarded historian who received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee in 1933, Eron Opha Moore Rowland (1861-1951) was the wife of noted Mississippi historian and author Dunbar Rowland (1864-1937) who served as the director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History from its founding in 1902 till his death in 1937. This book was an outgrowth of Eron Rowland's 1921 article "The Mississippi Territory in the War of 1812" issued in the Publications of the Mississippi Historical Society with, of course, extensive revisions and added research regarding Old Hickory. In addition to this landmark Jackson study, Eron Rowland was the first biographer of Confederate first lady Varina Davis with her two volume VARINA HOWELL, WIFE OF JEFFERSON DAVIS published in 1931 also by Macmillan.
