Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In 1841 the Great Western Railway, under the direction of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, opened its main line all the way between London and Bristol. Abingdon had the first branch line to be built in the area and, although having a route length of just 2 and a half miles and a journey time of only 10 minutes between Abingdon and Radley it managed to survive for 128 years. Sadly, as motorised transport became more accessible, lines began to close, first to passengers and then to freight. In this well researched book, Terry Moors brings to life the county's railways and describes the reasons for their construction and for their subsequent closure. Modern photographs accompany those from earlier times, some previously unpublished. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Softcover. Condizione: Very Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice book in great condition. Pages in excellent condition. No notes or highlighting. See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> Birmingham, 'city of a thousand trades' and heart of the West Midlands, was in no hurry to embrace the coming of the railway. When it did, however, it was certainly in style with four railway companies competing in the early years for routes into the city, namely the Grand Junction Railway (1837); London & Birmingham Railway (1838); Birmingham & Gloucester Railway (1841) and the Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway (1842). The first train to arrive in Birmingham, in 1837, came from Liverpool on the newly laid track of the Grand Junction Railway, to their temporary terminus at Vauxhall. However, a much grander terminal was planned for Birmingham and in 1838 the London & Birmingham Railway completed its line from Euston to the new station in Curzon Street. The impressive entrance building is a listed structure and stands today almost as it was when built. There have been many books written on the subject of railways in Birmingham and the West Midlands and by and large these have covered the wider regional ar.…
