Dublin-born, and not wealthy, Lady Sidney Owenson Morgan (1776 to 1781-1859) was one of the most interesting literary figures of her time, both wildly popular ("The Wild Irish Girl," 1806) and well-criticized. She had her revenge; her c…ritics sometimes became rather nasty characters in her novels. Cagey about her exact age, contemporary portraits reveal her to be a great beauty of the day. She was perhaps a social climber; if so, she was rather good at it. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition. A scarce book; most copies seen are two separate volumes. Although published in Paris, the book is in written in English; her "To the Reader" makes clear that the book is intended as light reading such as might be found in a lady's boudoir, and was published through her publisher's entreaty. Perhaps he knew his market! Clean text; 268 pages. Extremely bright and clear; Quercus believes the paper has been conserved, probably at the time it was rebound in an ochre color with gilt lettering. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. First Edition. Son travail, publié pour la première fois à Londres en 1817, contient des réflexions sur les paysans, le théâtre ou encore les écrivains. La presse française lui reprocha de porter la marque de son engament politique : l'écrivaine s'est en effet efforcée de démontrer les bienfaits de la Révolution de 1789 et de souligner, en contrepartie, les maux et les injustices qui ont été restaurés en même temps que la monarchie. Le second volume s'achève sur trois appendices écrits par son mari, Thomas Charles Morgan, sur la législation, les finances et la médecine en France. Ex-libris de Jean Rouché. Dos insolés. "Le descrizioni si seguono da Nord a Sud, iniziando dal Moncenisio per arrivare a Napoli (Piemonte, Lombardia, Genova, Emilia-Romagna, Toscana, Roma, Napoli). Il ritorno passa rapidamente da Tolentino, Ancona, San Marino, Faenza, Padova fino a Venezia alla quale è dedicato l'ultimo capitolo" (Olschki). L'opera è improntata ad illuminate idee liberali e polemizza aspramente con la Chiesa e con le vessazioni che si verificavano ai danni della popolazioni in molti degli stati in cui era frammentata un Italia ancora non unificata. Profondamente sensibile alle questioni sociali, Lady Morgan denuncia lo stato di povertà e di sfruttamento in cui giaceva molta parte della popolazione italiana. In ragione di queste requisitorie la lettura e la pubblicazione del libro venne interdetta nello Stato della Chiesa. Sidney Owenson, in seguito Sidney Morgan (al confine tra Gran Bretagna ed Irlanda, 1776-Londra, 1859) fu una romanziera irlandese assai nota nella prima metà del XIX secolo nei paesi anglofoni. Pine-Coffin, 819/14: "Standard tour. With appendices on law, medicine, etc. Lady Morgan's Italy was at once one of the most comprehensive and most controversial works on Italy published at this time.". A testimonianza della controversa accoglienza ricevuta da quest'opera alcuni critici preferirono non commentare, altri la accolsero con entusiasmo. Byron così si espresse: "a really excellent book". Lady Morgan, nata Owenson (1780-1859), scrittrice prolifica, figura peculiare di donna letterata e spirito libero, originaria di Dublino, ebbe dal suo editore la proposta di scrivere un libro sull'Italia come già aveva fatto per la Francia, e ricevette un compenso di £2.000. Soggiornò in Italia tra il 1819 ed il 1820, frequentando il mondo colto ma restando attenta osservatrice anche dei costumi popolari. Il suo libro è una serrata denuncia, soprattutto per quanto riguarda gli Stati Sabaudi ed il Lombardo-Veneto, del clima opprimente dei primi anni della Restaurazione e del tentativo di riportare indietro la ruota della storia addirittura al periodo antecedente l'età delle riforme settecentesche e all'Ancien régime, con riferimenti puntuali anche alla legislazione, ma soprattutto all'oppressione culturale che si respirava nella Milano dell'epoca, pur senza rimpianti per la dominazione francese; la Lombardia le sembra una grande prigione, in mano ad una burocrazia rozza e militaresca. Le considerazioni sulle donne milanesi, tenute in soggezione e nell'ignoranza anche nella buona società, suscitarono molte ire e risposte polemiche. I primi due voll. sono dedicati al Piemonte, alla Lombardia, a Genova e alla Liguria, a Bologna e alla Toscana; gli altri due soprattutto a Roma, Napoli e Venezia. Tra le appendici è da segnalare la prima, De l'état de la médécine en Italie, e la seconda, Agricultures de la Lombardie. Non mancano poi in tutta l'opera anche considerazioni sulle condizioni economiche, le istituzioni culturali, le biblioteche, i teatri, i libri e le pubblicazioni più diffuse. L'opera di Lady Morgan, così critica su tanti aspetti, contribuì comunque a "fare opinione" e ad innescare reazioni positive nell'Italia risorgimentale. Il libro denunciava anche la complicità della Gran Bretagna nella situazione politica dell'Italia della Restaurazione, e fu assai lodato, tra gli altri, anche da Lord Byron. Lady Morgan, nata Owenson (1780-1859), scrittrice prolifica, figura peculiare di donna letterata e spirito libero, originaria di Dublino, ebbe dal suo editore la proposta di scrivere un libro sull'Italia come già aveva fatto per la Francia, e ricevette un compenso di £2.000. Soggiornò in Italia tra il 1819 ed il 1820, frequentando il mondo colto ma restando attenta osservatrice anche dei costumi popolari. Il suo libro è una serrata denuncia, soprattutto per quanto riguarda gli Stati Sabaudi ed il Lombardo-Veneto, del clima opprimente dei primi anni della Restaurazione e del tentativo di riportare indietro la ruota della storia addirittura al periodo antecedente l'età delle riforme settecentesche e all'Ancien régime, con riferimenti puntuali anche alla legislazione, ma soprattutto all'oppressione culturale che si respirava nella Milano dell'epoca, pur senza rimpianti per la dominazione francese; la Lombardia le sembra una grande prigione, in mano ad una burocrazia rozza e militaresca. Le considerazioni sulle donne milanesi, tenute in soggezione e nell'ignoranza anche nella buona società, suscitarono molte ire e risposte polemiche. I primi due voll. sono dedicati al Piemonte, alla Lombardia, a Genova e alla Liguria, a Bologna e alla Toscana; gli altri due soprattutto a Roma, Napoli e Venezia. Tra le appendici è da segnalare la prima, De l'état de la médécine en Italie, e la seconda, Agricultures de la Lombardie. Non mancano poi in tutta l'opera anche considerazioni sulle condizioni economiche, le istituzioni culturali, le biblioteche, i teatri, i libri e le pubblicazioni più diffuse. L'opera di Lady Morgan, così critica su tanti aspetti, contribuì comunque a "fare opinione" e ad innescare reazioni positive nell'Italia risorgimentale. Il libro denunciava anche la complicità della Gran Bretagna nella situazione politica dell'Italia della Restaurazione, e fu assai lodato, tra gli altri, anche da Lord Byron. La représentation par Lady Morgan des réformes révolutionnaires comme salutaires à la société française a rencontré une opposition féroce dans le climat post-révolutionnaire, à la fois au Royaume-uni pa…r la Quarterly review contre les Réformistes et à Paris par les royalistes, ce qui lui valut un ordre symbolique du gouvernement français contre son retour en France. Parmi les autres réponses, on peut citer une attaque de son propre traducteur, Observations sur l'ouvrage de Defauconpret: La France; par Lady Morgan (1817), et une réfutation point par point dans France As It Is de William Playfair; Not Lady Morgan's France (1818; Paris 1819). En partie à cause de cette critique et en grande partie de ses mérites, la France s'est avérée l'un des livres de voyage les plus populaires de l'époque, avec quatre éditions londoniennes en 1818, ainsi que trois à Paris et trois aux États-Unis.Bel exemplaire. le faux-titre manque.
