Nigel Morland had once been editor of The Edgar Wallace Mystery Magazine, and had searched the British Museum Reading Room for little-known Victorian crime stories to publish in the magazine in a section he called "Period Pieces". This volume reprints a selection of those stories (taken from the Edgar Wallace magazine, not from the more serious, The Criminologist, another magazine Morland subsequently edited). A few of the names here are recognized - Mrs. Gaskell, Dumas (fils), Villiers de L'Ilse Adam, Chekhov - but most are "refreshingly unfamiliar". Morland provides a preface and a short introduction to each story. Grey cloth boards show a minuscule bump to top of spine, but this is basically a fine copy in a dust jacket which is very good indeed, with slight browning and wear to top edge.
