Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. The author of "Parnassus on Wheels" and "The Haunted Bookshop", Christopher Morley, here presents a modest celebration of himself "having passed the average of his actuarial expectancy", as well as the expression of concern for the German take-over of Europe. There was much to be concerned about in 1938. The Nazis were getting ever more powerful; Mr. Chamberlain at 10 Downing Street was proving to be a disappointment, and the abdicating King Edward was also a disappointment. The frontispiece of the book is a lovely black-and-white photograph of a black cat sitting in front of 10 Downing. A cat may look on a prime minister -- Christopher Morley, novelist, poet, essayist and literary editor, watched, along with the rest of America, the terrible events unfolding in Europe, as Hitler's Nazi war machine overrode international borders and trampled individual rights. The big fear of the day was that America would become embroiled in the European Situation. To some it was a foregone conclusion. To others it was only to be hoped against. "History of an Autumn" is a short book, but lively as were all the products of Morley's mind. It is basically an extended meditation on human foibles - the impossibility of truly perceiving world having the full complexity of events as they are happening. The book seems to have been written - or at least conceived - whilst Morley was commuting by train along the Hudson River. His commentary on the ubiquitous advertising that appears everywhere on the American landscape - the dichotomy between its banal pronouncements and the dreadful events occurring in Europe. He reminiscences on personal sojourns with friends, such as Richard Buckminster Fuller, with whom he spends a weekend in Connecticut. Much on everybody's minds were the actions of Neville Chamberlain - a man burdened by an almost impossible task. Easy to point the finger at that poor soul, but Morley has some astute things to say about such judgement. Altogether a thought-provoking book, dealing with dire events, but still and all, partaking of Morley's clear and sympathetic personality.
