Arbogaste si uccise con la spada, preferendo morire di morte volontaria anziché essere catturato dai nemici ; Virio Nicoinaco Flaviano già si era dato la morte, vedendosi tradito dalle sue truppe che presidiavano il passo di Nauporto. Zosimo riferisce che dopo la battaglia Teodosio si recò a Roma dove, convocato il Senato, che era rimasto fedele alle antiche tradizioni degli antenati , l Imperatore esortò i senatori ad abbracciare il Cristianesimo. Ma nessuno obbedì a questa esortazione né scelse di allontanarsi dalle tradizioni avite trasmesse loro fin da quando l Urbe era stata fondata, per preferire ad esse una convinzione irrazionale.
