NOTE THAT SINCE THE BOOK WEIGHS OVER TWO POUNDS, THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES IF YOU REQUIRE PRIORITY MAIL OR LIVE OUTSIDE THE USA.XX [From the preface] Late in 1967, the Arkansas Archeological Survey became aware that a project by the Corps of Engineers was going to widen a ditch and levee which bordered the west side of Big Lake Wildlife Refuge in extreme northeast Arkansas. Dr. Yorse, Survey Archeologist at Arkansas State University, investigated a portion of the project area where three sites had been reported (3MS19, 3MS20, and 3MS25). No funds were available from the National Park Service for work in 1968, so, under a permit from the Department of the Interior, the Survey sponsored and funded an initial testing of the three sites (Morse 1968). On the basis of this work, it was felt that 3MS20, the Zebree site, contained information of great importance to the understanding of the beginning of the Mississippi stage in northeast Arkansas, and in particular the relationship of Mississippian culture in the Lower Valley to events at Cahokia. As a consequence, a cooperative agreement was executed between the survey and the National Park Service for eight weeks of excavation at the Zebree site in the summer of 1969. The results of that work provided so much new data on late Woodland and early Mississippi occupation In northeast Arkansas that Dr. Morse went far beyond a simple descriptive statement in his research. He suggested that at least two more seasons of excavations would be necessary at the site, and he prepared in draft a manuscript which included both a description of the project and its significance as he understood It In 1970, and a section on the relationships of Zebree with the beginnings of the Mississippi stage In the Lower Valley. This report includes the first part of that manuscript. In 1973, the Manager of Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge, in compliance with Executive Order 11593, nominated the Zebree site for inclusion in the National Register.
