Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Limited edition. 1/300. 4to. xx,315pp. Silver-stamped black cloth with silver lettering on spine. Fine copy with three Ladino adaptations of the biblical Joseph narrative. 1) Poema de Yosef: A late fourteenth or early fifteenth-century poetic version of the Joseph tale, composed in Spain and remaining popular in the Ottoman Jewish communities after the 1492 Expulsion of the Jews. 2) Coplas de Yosef ha-Saddiq: composed before 1732 by Abraham Toledo and popularized throughout the Ottoman Empire, this extensive poetic work which includes many sequences meant to be sung has survived in two versions, one shorter than the other; the larger, printed in Constantinople in 1732, and the shorter, printed in Belgrade in 1861 but based on the now lost Salonica edition from 1755. 3) Joseph's Tale in the Ladino "Sefer ha-Yasar": written originally in a biblical Hebrew style within the medieval Jewish tradition of pseudo-historical and legendary narratives, imitating non-Jewish models of epic chronicles and romances of chivalry, the Sefer ha-Yasar dedicates a third of its text to the life and tribulations of Joseph. (M. Lazar). Technical editor: Robert Dilligan. Tiny bump on bottom edge of front cover. Text in Hebrew and Spanish with some English. Volume 5 of the series "The Sephardic Classical Library." Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: new. First edition. Small Quarto. xii, 643 (1)pp. Original illustrated blue wrappers with black lettering on cover and spine. Illustrated half-title. Frontispiece photograph. Text by the historian and rabbinical scholar Shelomoh Ibn Verga in Ladino, printed vis-à-vis in romanized and Hebrew Ladino language followed by a Spanish translation. Verga lived in the second half of the fifteenth century to 1554 and was active in ransoming Jews taken captive during the reign of the Catholic rulers Ferdinand and Isabella. He left Spain after 1492 and lived for about five years in Lisbon. "But following the forced mass conversions there after 1497, he and his family might have lived several years as "conversos" before leaving Portugal in 1506 or 1507 in the wake of a major massacre in Lisbon and settled in Italy" (Lazar). The chronicle Shebet Yehuda contains an account of 64 persecutions, including narrative of disputations, and covers Jewish customs in different countries. Verga wrote and published Shebet Yehuda in Turkey where it was published first in 1550 and was one of the first Jewish historiographic studies written by a Jew. It has been reprinted several times and has been translated into German, Spanish, and Latin. Text in Ladino, Hebrew and Spanish, introduction in English.…

Hardcover. Condizione: vg. Limited Edition. 1/300. 4to. XVIII. [2], 370pp. Original red-brick smyth-sewn clothbound with silver illustration on front cover and silver lettering on spine. Frontispiece. Second volume in the "Sephardic Classical Library" series. The only extant 15th-century Spanish translation of Maimonides' Guide for the Perplexed, preserved in a single manuscript at the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, of which only very small fragments have been published during the last hundred years. Written originally by Maimonides in Judeo-Arabic, this monumental philosophical and exegetical treatise was translated into Spanish by the Jewish converso Pedro de Toledo, in the first decades of the 15th century from two different surviving Hebrew translations (by Samuel Ibn Tibbon and Yehuda Al-Harizi), while possibly also consulting the Judeo-Arabic and other texts. It was the first translation of Maimonides' work into a vernacular language and possibly the most extensive philosophical text in Spanish prose. The first 20 folios of the manuscript are densely covered with glosses of the translator and critical comments written in a mid-15th century hand by an anonymous Jewish reader. Since 1948, Americo Castro strongly advocated the need to make available the entire text, "to see how one understood and interpreted a complex book of philosophical questions at a time when nothing comparable in philosophical density had ever been attempted in the Castillan language." This work offers for the first time a complete transcription of the entire text and its glosses. Includes a selected bibliography. Preface in English; text in Spanish. Binding and interior in fine condition. R. Moses Maimonides (Rambam) was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure, both during his lifetime and after his death, but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba, Spain but fled as a child due to Almohad persecution of Jews. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi, physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah, his only work not in Arabic, still carries canonical authority, particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community, as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj, Kitab al-Fara'I, a book on precepts, and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin, known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim, The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge and explaining away anthropomorphic and antropopathic terms in the Bible. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages.…

Softcover. Condizione: vg. 8vo. xxxix,256pp. Original illustrated wraps. Photographic frontispiece of Henry J. Leir. This epic poem by Antonio Enriques Gómez is based on the Biblical story of Samson. "In his prologue to "Samson Nazareno," Gómez clearly insinuates why at this time in his Converso situation he chooses a biblical episode in which Samson represents his own repressed and enchained psyche in the shadow of the Spanish Inquisition and the treachery of his beloved Dalila, i.e., Spain." (M. Lazar). In this work, Moshe Lazar edited the original Poema Heroico from 1656. Illustrated with b/w reproductions of the title-page and all plates from the original edition. Minor creasing on bottom right corner of from wrappers. Text in Spanish and English. Tight copy with wraps in very good, interior in fine condition.…
