4to. 6.5 x 8.5 in. [16 pp (unpaginated)]. With colour-photo illustrations throughout, most w/ photographer's credit w/in negative, and printed captions identifying photographers. Colour-illustrated softcovers, cover art of gate leading into Mount Rainier w/ two Brass Era automobiles, colour illustration on back cover of automobiles on road to Mount Rainier (some wear, minor scuffing, light creasing), still VG- copy. First edition of this exceedingly scarce brochure touting automobile tours and ascent of Mount Rainier, also issued by Nowell under the title of "Souvenir of Mount Tacoma." Images include Mirror Lake, automobile on Government road, touring cars filed with passengers driving through the rustic log entrance, parked at the National Park Inn, as well as climing the glaciers on Mt. Rainier, and even "Snowballing" snow ball fights. Asahel Curtis (1874-1941) was one of three founders of The Mountaineers, organized climbs through the Cascades, and by 1917 had become chief guide at Mount Rainier National Park. His studio output was prodigious, and many of his images of Mount Rainier include the Curtis & Miller studio credit of when he partnered with Miller. Frank H. Nowell (1864-1950) began gold mining with his father Thomas Nowell on Douglas Island around 1886, and in 1900 went to Nome, where he turned his photography hobby into a profession, later becoming the official photographer for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. No copies located in Worldcat; See: Michael Cirelli Collection on Northwest Photography, 1864-2000, Sophie Fry Bass Library, Seattle, WA; Duncan, Asahel Curtis, Photographer (2008).

Oblong folio. 13 x 10.25 in. [33 leaves (unnumbered).], on thick black paper stock. With 31 silver gelatin photos sized 5 x 8 in. to 6.5 x 8.5 in., two with sepia tinting. Contemporary black pebbled cloth (minor wear, and very slight bumping to corners, minor rippling to textblock from mounting of images, 1 w/ minor creasing at corner), still a VG album. This outstanding souvenir photo album encompasses 31 different photographs documenting a party's trek into Mount Rainier National Park with one photo depicting the party traveling by horseback with two women in the group, one riding sidesaddle. Images include Spray Falls which was a waterfall fed by Spray Creek, tributary of the Puyallup River, Paradise River; the wildflower meadows on the way to Indian Henry's Hunting Ground, Narada Falls, Eagle Peak, Pinnacle Peak, and Steven's Glacier with the ice fields and crevasses. Of additional interest is the photo of the tents at John Reese's tent hotel Camp of the Clouds. Following the establishment of Mount Rainier as a National Park in 1899, Reese would put up his tents as soon as weather permitted, and then take down his "hotel rooms" as the weather caved in on Alta Vista Ridge due north of the present day Paradise Visitor's Center. The woman riding sidesaddle with her brimmed hat obscuring part of her face does bear a resemblance to Ada Woodruff Anderson, who published her "To the Summit of Mt. Rainier in the July, 1901, Midsummer Outing magazine issue. Barnes (1876-1920) was both photographer and painter, who photographed people, cities and lanscapes of the Pacific Northwest, operating out of studios in Parkland and Tacoma, WA. His best known works are probably "Sights and Scenes from Tacoma to Paradise Park" (1909), and "Our Greatest Montain and Alpine Regions of Wonder (1911) with A.H. Denman.

The four items are in good condition, lightly-aged and with slight creasing to the extremities of the letter. The letter is 1p., foolscap 8vo. Willis writes that he is 'forwarding the report at the earliest moment practicable. If in any respect it should fail to cover the ground agreed upon, I will gladly supplement it to the best of my ability'. He is waiting for Anthony's instructions over his 'reports': 'I understood that you did not wish them sent by mail.' He ends by expressing his 'sincere appreciation of your courtesy during our trip together'. He will not 'soon forget' Anthony's wife's hospitality. The dated card ('Hotel Cecil | Julio 8 - 1914') thanks Anthony for 'a very pleasant evening'. The first of the undated cards presents a paper that 'may serve to introduce you to some of the ideas that I foster in regard to the origin of continents and mountains, and I trust may also give you that pleasure which a philosophic mind feels in approaching the limits of knowledge'. In the second undated card Willisenquires whether Anthony has received the 'pamphlet on foundations of mountains and continents', which he left at the Grand Hotel, 'as an introduction to the general subject which we began to discuss when I had the pleasure of dining with you. The porter says it was delivered to you, but I ha'e me doots'.
