The first edition was issued in Venice by Damiano Zenaro in folio format in 1584 -- (Trinity College, Cambridge has a copy of this edition with a title page dated 1585, see Adams M1886) . There were subsequent editions published in Cologne (by three different printers in 1597, 1614 and 1633. A significant and influential civil law treatise by Pietro Niccolo Mozzi; the title page states that Mozzi was from Macerata (descended from a Neopolitan family). After an introduction devoted to contracts in general, the author divides his treatise into 12 books on the various sorts of contracts. The final part is a detailed treatment dealing with marriage contracts [De nuptiis, id est, sponsalibus, et matrimoniis]. The author also published a Tractatus de Feudis in 1590. PROVENANCE: With the plain, engraved booklabel of William W. Goodman [1900-1981] mounted to the front paste-down endpaper. Goodman was born in Memphis, Tennessee and returned to his native city after education at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Law School. By family tradition, Goodman evidently had some doubts about his legal calling after finishing the second year at Harvard Law. Seeking a sign as to his abilities and standing in the law, Mr. Goodman took the Tennessee Bar exam as a personal test. The result was that he made the highest grade ever achieved to that time in the State. His legal career in Memphis extended more than a half century, but it was interrupted by the Second World War. Initially, Goodman served as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve, training pilots from Norway and Holland; he played a significant role in an air evacuation in Norway. Subsequently, as a staff member of the Allied Joint Chiefs of Staff, he helped achieve the rescue 1,200 Jewish families in the Balkans who were threatened with being sent to concentration camps. Evidently, he personally persuaded the Turkish government to issue passports to members of these families. In recognition of his distinguished work during the war, Goodwin was awarded the title: Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau from Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, the Legion of Merit, and the Royal Yugoslav Aviation Wings. Additionally, Goodman was made a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur in France, became a Knight Commander of the Royal Order of St. Olaf or Norway, and received an O.B.E. in England. In addition to law books, Mr. Goodman also formed collections of historical documents.
