Paperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. About The Book : The most difficult task of my life lay before me when I undertook to write the Life of Anandabai Joshee. In copying letters or using material furnished by those who loved her, I have been obliged to moderate the terms of affection and admiration which would have seemed extravagant to those who never saw her, or saw her only after her star "drooped toward its setting." Its rapid sale will reward then in the best way for all the self- sacrifice, hard labor, and bitter grief which their devotion has involved, for we hope through that, to aid the projects of her friend and cousin, the Pundita Eamabai Sarasvati. To speak properly of the history of the peoples or languages of Hindustan requires a profound scholarship, which I am far from claiming; but a few words concerning it were necessary before we could enter on the life of Anandabai Joshee. About The Author : MRS. Caroline Wells Dall (1822-1912) was an American feminist writer, transcendentalist, and reformer. She was affiliated with the National Women's Rights Convention, the New England Women's Club, and the American Social Science Association. Her associates included Elizabeth Peabody and Margaret Fuller, as well as members of the Transcendentalist movement in Boston. Caroline Wells Healey was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, daughter of Mark Healey, a merchant and investor, and his wife, Caroline (née Foster) Healey. She lived there off and on during her life. In the last years of her life, she suffered greatly from arthritis, though she remained active until her death at the age of 90 on December 17, 1912. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Anandabai Joshee, a 19th-century Hindu woman who challenged social and cultural expectations to become a medical doctor. Born into a wealthy family in India, Anandabai faced numerous obstacles in pursuing her education, including resistance from her family and the prevailing societal norms that discouraged women's intellectual pursuits. Despite these challenges, she persevered and eventually traveled to the United States to study medicine. The book explores the themes of gender inequality, cultural identity, and the power of education to transform lives. Anandabai's story sheds light on the struggles faced by women in India during the 19th century and highlights the importance of defying societal norms to pursue one's dreams. It demonstrates the transformative power of education in empowering women to overcome systemic barriers and make a meaningful impact on society. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book, a collection of essays by the author, explores the lives of six influential women of the medieval era. The author argues that these women, often overlooked in traditional historical accounts, played a significant role in shaping the social and political landscape of their time. Through the lives of Aspasia, Hypatia, Theodora, Matilda of Tuscany, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Isabella of Castile, the author examines themes of power, ambition, and female agency. The author places these women within the context of their respective societies and explores how their experiences intersected with major historical events. Through the lens of gender, this book sheds light on the complex and often contradictory nature of medieval society and offers a fresh perspective on the role of women in shaping history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. 1st Edition. 1 leaf [ad for Woman's Right to Labor; or, Low Wages and Hard Work. Three Lectures by Mrs. C. H. Dall.], xiii, 402 pp, 1 unnumbered leaf. Original cloth. Pieces missing at top & bottom of spine (moreso at bottom of spine). Cloth worn along top & bottom edges of covers. Corners of covers very worn. First Edition. "Dall researched and wrote articles that were among the earliest examples of women's studies in America: studies of women of the past whom history had neglected or maligned, whose lives she now interpreted in a positive light" (Helen R. Deese, ed., Daughter of Boston, The Extraordinary Diary of a Nineteenth Century Woman Caroline Healey Dall, p. 176). The Preface is signed "Caroline H. Dall" (p. x). In her Preface, Dall writes: "The 'Studies' were written nearly eight years ago, on an impulse given by the dissatisfaction I felt concerning the character of much of the biographical work which the newly awakened interest in woman had called out. . . . These 'Studies' were printed, hardly published, in a journal [The Una] devoted to the interests of woman; and this printing was an advantage, because, both in this country and in Europe, it brought them before eyes well qualified to decide upon their worth, and to whose gentle, appreciative glance I owe my willingness to preserve them. . . (pp. v, vii). The chapters in Part I are: I. Aspasia. II. Hypatia. III. The Countess Matilda. IV. Cassandra Fedele. V. The Women of the House of Montefeltro. VI. The Women of Bologna. VII. The Contributions of Women to Medical Science (pp. 135-168). VIII. The Duties and Influence of Women. IX. Marie Cunitz, the Mathematician. X. Madame de Stael. XI. Margaret Fuller (pp. 226-248). XII. "The Great Lawsuit": Marie Astell; Mary Wollstonecraft; Margaret Fuller (pp. 249-264). Part II -- Fancies (pp. 267-386). Dr. Lowell and His Ministry (pp. 389-402). 8 of the 12 chapters in this book were originally published in The Una (1853-1855): I, II, III, IV, VI, VIII, IX, X. Quoting Wikipedia about Dall: " Dall became an active participant in the Boston Women's Rights movement. She was soon an active lecturer and writer on the topic, and organized the New England Women's Rights Convention, along with suffragist Paulina Davis. Also with Davis she founded Una, a journal devoted to woman's rights, and the pioneer publication of its kind.
