Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Used; Good. The story tells of the poor honest orphan John, who finds employment with the tanner Abel Fletcher and is befriended by Abel's weakling son Phineas, improves his position, and marries the book's heroine, Ursula March. John's status as 'gentleman' is earned not by birth and wealth but by his own integrity and worth. ?It was the first time in my life I ever knew the meaning of that rare thing, tenderness. A quality different from kindliness, affectionateness, or benevolence; a quality which can exist only in strong, deep, and undemonstrative natures, and therefore in its perfection is oftenest found in men.? A gem among a bounty of out of print, rare and stunning vintage books on our second hand bookstore. Title: John Halifax, Gentleman Author: Mrs. Craik Publisher: Collins Publication Date: Undated Format: Softcover Condition: This book is in good condition for its age with minor signs of wear.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. Reprint. 1. John Halifax, Gentleman is a novel by Dinah Craik, first published in 1856. Dinah Maria Craik (born Dinah Maria Mulock, also often credited as Miss Mulock or Mrs. Craik) (1826-1887) was an English novelist and poet. The action is centred in the town of Tewkesbury, scarcely disguised by the fictional name Norton Bury, in Gloucestershire. The story is narrated by Phineas, a friend of the central character. John Halifax is an orphan, determined to make his way in the world through honest hard work. He is taken in by a tanner, Abel Fletcher, who is a Quaker, and thus meets Phineas, who is Abel's son. John eventually achieves success in business and love, and becomes a wealthy man. . Pages browning, gift inscription on ffep (1895), else very good. GOOD. . 12mo 7" - 7½" tall. 424 pp.
