Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. This 6.375 x 9.125 inch, 477 page hardcover book is the 1867 first edition of this book as shown by the 1867 date on the title page corresponding to the copyright page designation. This copy is in very good condition with definite time wear showing to especially the corners and spine extremities of the stamped, patterned blue cloth covers with gilt lettering and soldier-and-flag design on the spine. The corners show rubbing through but not severely and the spine extremities show wear and some fraying and whitening but again this is not extensive. The binding is firm and tight. The interior shows a smallish stamp on the front paste-down reading ?Sold through the Subscription Department of H. H. Bancroft and Co. San Francisco. Agents Wanted? - - and with two previous owner?s penciled names on ffep and following endpaper. This book features a beautiful frontispiece engraving by Agustus Robin titled ?The Grand Review at Washington? and with a tissue guard separating the first title page and then subsequent title page with the 1867 date listed at the bottom of that second title page corresponding with that same date on the following copyright page. The text pages are in at least very good condition and probably better with age toning showing a bit to the paper and with some few specks of probably foxing but this is not extensive. The book features 5 additional full-page engravings which are very nice in quality. 477 pages.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fair covers, VG internally. SALESMAN'S SAMPLE. SALESMAN SAMPLE. NOT THE COMPLETE TEXT of this collection of religiously-centered testimonials and stories from and about the soldiers of "the late civil war", gathered by Mrs. Hoge who worked for the U.S. Sanitary Commission during the War. Octavo. Navy blue stamped cloth, quite worn, 9 in. x 6 in. Red, white and blue title page (with tissue-guard) and ornate drop caps. Dedicated to " The Returned, Triumphant Soldiers of The Grand Army of The Republic, and to the Memory of The Honored Dead Whose Precious Dust Lies Scattered From Maine to Texas". The author served with The U.S. Sanitary Commission and as part of that service, visited a number of hospitals where wounded soldiers were in residence. The customer base appeared to be in and around Syracuse, New York. At first glance this is a typical salesman's sample book, a condensed binding of noteworthy pages and illustrations from a larger book, carried by salespeople, with the aim of selling them the entire book which would arrive at a later date. This particular volume, however, was used in a multitude of different ways which included its original purpose: 11 partially filled handwritten pages of new customers' names, addresses, amount of payment, and which style (English Cloth, or Extra English Cloth, with Gilt). Book was also used as a long list of ciphers indicating personal household accounting; grocery receipt records; a landlady's roominghouse records; an address book, and the writing out of a song or hymn.
