Contemporary blue quarter leather binding with gilt spine titles, blind tooling and 5 bands; red marbled boards, endpapers and page edges. Boards and leather gently rubbed. Moderately sunned spines. All joints sound. Most hinges sound, with the occasional minor splits that are still holding firm, with the exception of vol. 1, the rear hinge of which has gone, though the rear board is still firmly held by it's [external] joint. Internally very crisp and clean with minimal foxing. Overall Very Good. Pencil note of vol. 1 FEP says " The supplementary plates are not bound in." Enhanced by a delightful, poetic and beautifully inked contemporary inscription: "Adeline Francesca Wright. August 1879. In memory of happy rambles with her father, through the ferny lanes and limestone dales of Derbyshire, up and down the pine woods on the Esterelles, after anemones, narcissus & tulips under the olives of the Riviera, on the sunny alps of Como & Lugano, and after crocus and gentians along the snow drifts of the Splugen; and in the bright hope that through the love of the Father who made all these we may rove, with those we love, the happy fields above, and ever praise his grace who giveth all."
