8vo, pp. xvi, 351, [1], 32 (Murray catalogue); frontispiece and 4 wood-engraved plates; original purple cloth stamped in gilt on spine. Notes on rear endpaper and rear endpaper partially torn, two ink ownership inscriptions on front flyleaf, spine darkened, spine ends rubbed and cracked; all else very good and sound. Lucy Atkinson worked as a governess in St. Petersburg, where she met and married the explorer Thomas Whitlam Atkinson. She spent the years 1848-1853 travelling with her husband in Central Asia and here gives her charming accounts of time spent in Buriatia and Western Mongolia.
