This book argues that the historical precedents set by religion and government regarding unity between factions based on marriage and family provide a path towards reconciliation between the Northern and Southern United States in the midst of the American Civil War. The author draws parallels between the biblical covenants of marriage and the oath of allegiance to the US Constitution. Through analysis of Judaic and Christian scripture, the author contends that adherence to the US Constitution as a legally-binding social contract would restore peace and unity between the states. Published during the war's second year, the book's arguments for reconciliation and preservation of the Union have a particular historical resonance as the country wrestled with its internal division. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. From the foreword: Such a volume as is here presented to the reader will, I believe, meet a public demand for information about our greatest non-political institution. I know of no greater change which has taken place in popular interest in the last twenty years than in matters relating to banking and allied questions. No subject is more discussed today than the relation of monetary policy to commercial and industrial conditions. Informed and uninformed persons are pouring forth books and pamphlets on the gold standard, a managed currency, and allied topics like a violent hailstorm. In this multitude of counsellors there is a good deal more confusion than wisdom. The writers are agreed on one thing only, namely in blaming the Bank of England for all the woes from which we suffer. But this book is not a treatise on the banking system. It is not an exposition or defence of the policy and practice of the Bank of England. It has a much more interesting and intelligible purpose. It is not controversial. It is a history of the rise of the banking system in England from the time when the Italian exchange bankers transsferred their operations from Lombardy to London to the day when "the City" became the world's great financial centre. ------------------------------------------- 288 pages, b/w photographs, index ---------- Orders of $100.00 or more are shipped using tracked courier delivery services. Condizione: VERY GOOD. First thus - the 'second edition' Originally published in 1882, this classic account of the missionary work in the Hawaiian Islands was 'gathered from letters and journal extending over a period of more than 50 years selected and arranged by herself.' Thurston arrived in Hawaii in 1820 and died there in 1876, and this book provides a great deal of detail about life in Hawaii as well as the work of the missionaries. This second edition, one of just 1000 copies, includes a new introduction by Lorrin A. Thurston, a reproduction of the original title page, and is the first to include 16 additional illustrations, some from engravings, others from drawings by Lucy's daughter and others. (the first had only a frontispiece) . As such, this could be considered the 'best' edition. x, 307 pp plus 4 pp index. Very good condition in gray cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine (faint stamp of previous owner, some rubbing and wear to cloth covers, but gilt lettering on spine is bright, binding is sturdy, pages are clean and supple.) Uncommon in all printings.
