Preceded by illustrated half title (both vols) and title page plus preview issue (spécimen) in Arches paper wraps (vol. 1.) Edition de luxe of 100 on fine papier de chine with an additional print of each illustration without the text (hors texte) on China paper, and signed smoke proofs of twelve cuts from the text. This copy stamped number 52 on the limitation page. Leaf edges minimally foxed, board lower edges slightly rubbed, else near fine. Vol. I with mistletoe Ex Libris of Swiss bibliophile August Vautier. Magnificent presentation of many great fin-de-siècle artists, illustrators and wood engravers by a publisher intent on preserving a medium under threat by photo reproduction. In the scarce limited edition de luxe on coated China paper instead of wove for optimum image rendering. Tome II, seul volume paru et, a priori, tirage unique sur papier japon, destiné aux membres du Comité International de la Croix-Rouge. Etant donné la rareté de cet ouvrage, il est fort probablement qu'en dehors des 5 membres du Comité et du secrétaire de la présidence, personne n'ai eu la possibilité d'acquérir cet ouvrage en français. Il est donc fort probable qu'il n'ait existé que 6 exemplaires en français de cet ouvrage, tous sur papier japon (voir à ce sujet l'article "Le Livre de la Croix-Rouge" publié dans le Bulletin international des Sociétés de la Croix-Rouge, juillet 1903, n°135). En revanche, il semble que l'édition espagnole ait été commercialisée : il existe des exemplaires d'édition avec la couverture reprenant les dessins de Wieland. Six volumes étaient prévus, le tome I devant être publié à la fin afin d'y publier la liste des souscripteurs. L'ouvrage a été édité simultanément en français, espagnol, anglais, allemand et italien. Ce volume concerne les premiers pays : Allemagne, Argentine, Autriche-Hongrie, Belgique & Congo, Bulgarie. Les plats de la reliure, qui sont répétés en gravures en rouge dans l'ouvrage, sont de Hans Beat Wieland (1867-1945), on retrouve ses initiales HB W sur les gravures. La première page pour chaque pays est d'un artiste en particulier, notons tout d'abord Alfons Mucha pour l'Argentine (première page et culs-de-lampe). Alfred Roller pour l'Allemagne et l'Autriche-Hongrie, LA (pour Louis Anquetin ?) pour la Belgique et Samokiche pour la Bulgarie. L'ouvrage présente les activités de chaque pays avec un texte (imprimé sur papier japon) et des photos (sur papier glacé). On joint le prospectus de l'édition, expliquant notamment que le tome II était le premier publié. Cartonnage plein chagrin, plats en relief et dorés, tranches dorées, papiers des gardes avec croix rouge répétée. Reliure un peu frotté par endroits, coiffe supérieure avec accroc. Ouvrage exceptionnel, rarissime.
