This book by the Swiss John Henry Mueller, first published in 1977, more than fulfils that promise. It starts with a week-long camel ride in the deserts of Saudi Arabia to a rendezvous with a mysterious arms-dealer. Tales around the campfire conjure up the powerful figure of Abdul Aziz, the founder of the Saudi kingdom and conqueror of the free Bedouin tribes. The unexplained theft of a large quantity of explosives, the espionage of foreign powers in Iraq, the difficulties of life with the British and the dangerous suspicions of the Iraqi government set in motion developments which eventually force the author into a dramatic flight. Mueller s spellbinding descriptions of the life and customs of the Bedouin, their code of honour and their incredible memory are fascinating.
