Fin dall'antichità alcuni uomini particolarmente curiosi (poi li hanno chiamati scienziati), non si sono limitati ad osservare il mondo in cui vivevano - che, in fondo, è lo stesso in cui abitiamo anche noi oggi - ma hanno incominciato a porsi delle domande sul perché f…osse fatto proprio così. Si sono chiesti, ad esempio, perché il Sole sorge e tramonta tutti i giorni (dove va a dormire di notte?). Perché gli oggetti pesanti devono per forza cadere (e chi li sta tirando verso il basso?). Perché solo alcuni corpi galleggiano sull'acqua (che differenza c'è fra un grosso pezzo di legno che sta a galla e un minuscolo sassolino che invece va a fondo?). Perché, dopo un temporale a volte compare l'arcobaleno (da dove saltano fuori tutti quei colori?). E così via. Ed è proprio grazie agli innumerevoli tentativi di comprendere le regole a cui obbedisce la natura, ostinatamente portati avanti nelle varie epoche della storia, che oggi siamo in grado di dare una spiegazione ragionevole a (quasi) tutti i fenomeni di cui siamo quotidianamente spettatori. Io ne ho selezionati alcuni che mi sembrano particolarmente interessanti, per condurvi passo dopo passo alla loro comprensione. Per fare un po' d'ordine ho raggruppato i vari argomenti in cinque diverse sezioni. Vorrei, infine, rassicurarvi sul fatto che quello che vi sto proponendo di leggere non richiede un particolare impegno, e quindi può essere facilmente compreso anche da coloro che ritengono di non possedere un particolare feeling per la fisica e la matematica (in tutto il libro non compare nemmeno una formula, ve l'assicuro!). Sono sicuro che la lettura non vi annoierà perché la scoperta di cose nuove - sono quasi certo che molte delle cose che leggerete saranno per voi una vera novità! - non lascia mai indifferenti.
