Text free of highlighting and writing. Tightly bound. xviii, 252 pages : illustrations ; 29 cm. This book describes the struggles of a self taught photographer, Zebedee John Crouse, who from early childhood dreamed of some day photographing life in the hills of West Virginia, his native state. As a teenager, talking about being a photographer, Zebedee was discouraged and criticized by his father Anthony Hamilton Crouse the first, who felt the only "honorable occupations" for a man were those of farmer and soldier. In spite of his father's convictions Zebedee developed an artist's eye for detecting an object, person, or landscape and knew just the right time of day to squeeze the rubber bulb causing a spurt of air that opened the lens of his 1884 camera, and allowed him to take a black and white picture, using a glass negative. First on horseback, then by horse and buggy, and finally from his studio in the tiny community of Cecil, Taylor County West Virginia, Zebedee John Crouse lived his dream for fifteen years, 1895-1910. Moving to the prairielands of northeastern Montana he took a few pictures spanning a period from 1911 to 1926. Practically all of his more than two thousand glass negatives have been lost or destroyed and most of the pictures, he developed or enlarged, have also disappeared. The majority of the pictures and glass negatives that were preserved are of family members and where that is the case they are identified in this book. Photographer of the Hills and Prairielands is illustrated with 254 pictures of which 227 were taken, developed and printed by Zebedee, and another seven pictures of Zebedee himself, taken by his wife Victoria Robinson Crouse, were also developed and printed by him. Not only did Victoria take pictures of Zebedee she retouched his glass negatives and tinted his enlargements. The colored prints in this book are results of her work.
