In exchange, the Company pledged to raise the substantial sum of 1.2 million for the Crown, designated for prosecuting the War of the Spanish Succession and meeting other national exigencies. The legislation exemplifies the entanglement of imperial commerce with state finance: a private enterprise acting as financier to public war, while reaping the benefits of prolonged access to Asian markets. The Act's dual function, granting commercial stability and underwriting military ambition, marks a pivotal moment in the Company's transformation from mercantile venture to quasi-sovereign power. It is emblematic of early eighteenth-century Britain's reliance on its financial and trading elite to sustain expansionist policy abroad. 19 pages. Rather smaller in size than the folio acts often encountered published in London, these are none the less complete acts, word for word the same as the larger format and published at around the same dates.
