Kitty Anderson was the daughter of a prominent San Antonio resident and vocal Union Army supporter, Col. Charles Anderson. Following the Texas vote to seceed, the federal garrison was surrendered. Col. Anderson attempted to flee but was caught and arrested by Texas Confederate soldiers. Kitty and the rest of her family fled to Matamoros via Brownsville where they boarded a ship.
