J…ahrhunderts handelnde Geschichte der unglucklichen Liaison einer jungen Arbeiterin mit einem Studenten als ein Werk gefeiert und auch verdammt, das in Stil, Sujet und Wirkungsabsicht den Vorgaben der naturalistischen Schule Emile Zolas zu genugen sucht. Diese Zuordnung wurde aber von deren Begrunder hochstpersonlich in Zweifel gezogen. In den Augen Zolas verstosst der Autor gegen die erste und wichtigste Regel des Realismus-Naturalismus: die unparteiische und emotionslose Beobachtung seiner Figuren. Denn augenscheinlich beruhrten den Autor die Konflikte, Ideen und Leidenschaften der von ihm selbst erfundenen Gestalten zutiefst. Dessen ungeachtet leistete Narcis Oller mit seinem Romanwerk einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Neubelebung und zum Ausbau des Katalanischen als Literatursprache.
