Once, not too long ago, New England rivers ran silver in late summer and early fall, flashing with hundreds of thousands of wild Atlantic salmon returning from the sea to spawn in their clean, free-flowing home waters. Maine s little-known Ducktrap River is one of these rare salmon rivers. In 1995, a group of what now numbers 26 diverse organizations, including conservation groups, state and federal agencies, local governments and citizens groups, began working cooperatively with landowners to restore and protect the natural and scenic attributes of the Ducktrap watershed, including the salmon. In seven brief years the Ducktrap Coalition has achieved astonishing results.
