In French, with some text in Greek or German; includes an abstract in English. Johan Hedenborg (1786-1865) was a medical doctor whose curiosity gave him a wide range of interests in natural and social sciences. In 1825, he was attached to the embassy of Sweden and Norway to the Sublime Porte. After exploring the Aegean and both sides of the Red Sea for fifteen years, he settled in Rhodes with the aim of writing a history of the island. The manuscript, completed in 1857, was never published. It contains copies of 303 inscriptions on stone, 54 of them otherwise unknown, and drawings of more than 150 stamped amphora handles and tiles. All these documents are studied here.

Neuwertiges Ex. The purpose of the "Aegeum" series is to shed light on the Roman conquest of the Greek East from an economic viewpoint. The first volume of the series, edited by Richard Ashton and Nathan Badoud, is the result of collaborative research into the coinages of the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C. Its ten contributions allow us to uncover how the Romans gained control over the economic resources of the Greek cities, and to follow the gradual emergence of the denarius as the dominant silver coinage of the Aegean region. More generally, they advance our understanding of how the ancient economy functioned, and mark an important methodological advance in the analysis of the coinages of the Hellenistic period. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The Colossus of Rhodes is both the most famous and the least well-known monument of Ancient Greece. Numbered among the Seven Wonders of the World, this bronze statue of the god Helios, thirty-four metres in height, was created by the sculptor Chares of Lindos between the years 295 and 283 BC, only to be destroyed by an earthquake in 227 BC. The legends which have spread after its collapse seem so strange and contradictory that specialists in Greek sculpture havebeen dissuaded from investigating the topic. Nathan Badoud publishes the first comprehensive study devoted to the Colossus. His book mobilises a large array of sources, ranging from antiquity to thepresent day. It proposes an intellectual excavation through the layers of the literary, artistic, and scientific tradition. It envisages the statue in its religious, political, and topographical contexts. It explores its function, its technique, its appearance, its meaning, and its location. It reconsiders the beginnings of the Hellenistic world, marked by the emergence of Rhodes as an imperial power, embodied by the Colossus. In The Colossus of Rhodes, the first comprehensive examination of the Colossus, Nathan Badoud mobilises a large array of sources, ranging from antiquity to the present day, proposing an intellectual excavation through the layers of the literary, artistic, and scientific tradition to discover the historical Colossus.
