Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Revised Edition. 396, [4] pages. Frontis illustration. Illustrated. Cover has wear and soiling. Slightly shaken. The Preface states "I represent the distracted, suffering, loving motherhood of the World. Who, becoming aroused with a righteous fury rebelled at this torture. God blessed tis righteous rage and gave directions for the act, that cried out! Mothers with their hands tied, have beheld the mutilation of their sons and daughters till Almighty God heard their groanings, and sent me to answer the prayers of those grand women--The W. T.C.U. At the age of almost sixty-two, I feel that my work is almost done--one request I make of my dear sisters of the W. C. T.U., is to turn your powerful influence against "lodgism," especially against the paganism and idolatry called Free-Masonry. In which are originated the roots of all kinds of lusts." Caroline Amelia Nation (25 November 1846 - 9 June 1911), often referred to by Carrie, Carry Nation, or Hatchet Granny, was a radical member of the temperance movement, which opposed alcohol before the advent of Prohibition. Nation is noted for attacking alcohol-serving establishments (most often taverns) with a hatchet. Nation was also concerned about tight clothing for women; she refused to wear a corset and urged women not to wear them because of their harmful effects on vital organs. She described herself as "a bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what He doesn't like", and claimed a divine ordination to promote temperance by destroying bars. Alone or accompanied by hymn-singing women, Nation would march into a bar and sing and pray while smashing bar fixtures and stock with a hatchet. Between 1900 and 1910, she was arrested some 30 times for "hatchetations," as she came to call them. Nation paid her jail fines from lecture-tour fees and sales of souvenir hatchets.[17] The souvenirs were provided by a Topeka, Kansas pharmacist. Engraved on the handle of the hatchet, the pin reads, "Death to Rum." Carrie Nation was known as "Mother Nature" for the charity and religious work she did.[35] Because Nation believed drunkenness was a cause to many problems in society, she attempted to help those in prison.[35] In 1890, Nation founded a sewing circle in Medicine Lodge, Kansas to make clothing for the poor as well as prepare meals for them on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.[36] In 1901, Nation established a shelter for wives and children of alcoholics in Kansas City, Missouri. This shelter would later be described as an "early model for today's battered women's shelter".…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The use and need of the life of Carry A. Nation presents an intense personal reflection shaped by conviction and a sense of responsibility toward society. From the earliest memories of home and upbringing, the narrative shows how inherited values influence a growing awareness of injustice. The author observes the impact of destructive habits on families and communities, noting how environments marked by struggle can either weaken or strengthen a person's resolve. Through recalling moments of personal hardship, the writer emphasizes the emotional labor required to challenge accepted norms. Instead of focusing on confrontation alone, the narrative highlights an inner transformation, portraying how reflection can lead to action when ideals become inseparable from purpose. Encounters with suffering encourage a deeper understanding of vulnerability, particularly regarding those who lack support or protection. The opening of the book establishes a foundation of memory, self-examination, and moral clarity, showing how conviction is formed not through sudden revelation but through accumulated experience. These reflections set the direction for a life devoted to public reform, revealing how personal resilience can evolve into unwavering advocacy. …
