Lacking the engraved frontispiece titled "Pierre Paul Rubens". In Good condition. Bound in full brown leather with gilt ornamentation to edges. Paneled spine with…a black label and gilt ornamentation. Spine has a loss of leather to the head and tail edges, significant chipping throughout, impacting the legibility of the label, and cracking to joints. Boards have bumping to corners (primarily to the rear bottom fore corner), the leather is tearing and beginning to separate from the board along the front bottom fore corner, moderate chipping to edges, rubbing wear and discoloration to surfaces, and cracking to leather throughout. Textblock has an archival repair to the bottom corner of the first double spread plate [leaf 16], a small ink drawing to leaf [23], minor splitting to the gutter throughout, occasional closed tears and wear to edges [not impacting illustrations], light foxing to some pages, and age toning throughout. Some plates have tissue guards present. Contains a loose engraved plate reproduction of the painting "The Denial of Saint Peter" originally by Gerard Seghers laid in along the rear free end pages (c. 17th century). Text in French. Shelved in Room A Oversized. "La Gallerie Du Palais Du Luxembourg Peinte Par Rubens" is a famous 18th-century illustrated book documenting Peter Paul Rubens' 24-painting cycle of Marie de' Medici's life. This volume presents engraved reproductions of Peter Paul Rubens's works by 11 different artists. The eleven engravers are: I.B. Massé; G. Edelinck; Lud. de Chatillon; G. Duchange; A. Loir; J. Da una pittura di Rubens, incisione di Edelink delineata dal Nattier, raffigurante l'effige di Francesco De Medici, ripreso su un balcone… con tendaggi in abito da milizia equestre, e con al collo la croce patente, emblema di appartenenza all'ordine del Toson d'Oro. Bella impressione.

Reknown engravers contributed to this work which consists of a Title page, Advertisement page, an engraved portrait of Rubens and 24 large plates.Made by 'Benoit Audran I, the elder (1661-1721) was a French designer, etcher and engraver from Lyon. He was the brother of Jean Audran (1667-1756). He was taught the rudiments of engraving by his father (Germain Audran), and was later placed under the care of his' after 'a drawing by I.B. Nattier after Peter Paul Rubens'. Benoit Audran I, the elder (1661-1721) was a French designer, etcher and engraver from Lyon. He was the brother of Jean Audran (1667-1756). He was taught the rudiments of engraving by his father (Germain Audran), and was later placed under the care of his uncle Gerard Audran in Paris. Benoit Audran II was his nephew and the son of Jean Audran. He was appointed engraver to the king. He was active in Paris and his prints very well respected. Jean-Baptiste Nattier (1678-1726) was A French history painter from Paris. He was the eldest son of Marc Nattier the elder and Marie Courtois. Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a reknown Flemish Baroque painter, who ran a large studio in Antwerp.Condition: Very good, given age. Print attached to carrier. Edges reinforced on rear. Top left corner with some damage, but not nearly effecting image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
