Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Contains publisher's statement "Edition of 1956" and the first printing code "A" to the copyright page. A hint of rubbing to the upper and lower spine edges, else very nearly fine hardcover in waxed red linen with yellow titles and yellow illustration depicting a fireman blowing a horn to the front cover, and with yellow titles to the spine; in a very good plus dust jacket with a few creased edge-tears, slight wear to the upper and lower spine edges, and with a very small-size red inked number 59 to the front inner flap; original $2.75 printed price still intact to the front inner flap. Some dramatic, and some comforting black and white illustrations by Ray Naylor, who also did a superb job with the color dust jacket art portraying firemen in a horse-drawn fire-wagon, and the two boys with their collie. Smith drew on extensive research, read all available first-hand accounts, and interviewed actual survivors, to bring authentic history to this disaster thriller novel depicting early firemen, and Chicago residents, for children. The author has penned numerous other biographies and historical stories for children, this exciting tale is the hardest to find of all her books. Octavo; 174 pages.
