They are an important part of modern African popular culture and have often displaced Hollywood films.These films cover a wide spectrum of different genres. They range from comedy, romance and horror to religious films. Often the various genres are mixed but all of the films got something in common: They reflect the modern urban life in contemporary western Africa and are an account of the current process of social change in many societies.This paper mainly concentrates on religious films, especially those produced by charismatic Pentecostal Churches.

Durch die ideologisch bedingte Marginalisierung von Religion in der DDR kam es zu einer starken Säkularisierung der ostdeutschen Gesellschaft.Die Frage die sich stellt ist, ob es nach der Wende zu einer Wiederbelebung der Religion kam. Anschließend sollen Gründe für das Eintreten bzw. Nichteintreten dieses Phänomens gefunden werden.Eine weitere zentrale Frage ist, ob ein ähnlicher Prozess zu diesem Zeitpunkt auch in der BRD stattfand. Worin bestehen die Ähnlichkeiten und worin die Unterschiede Wo liegen dafür die Ursachen Allerdings beschränkt sich diese Arbeit auf die beiden wichtigsten Glaubensrichtungen in Deutschland, das evangelische sowie das katholische Christentum. Die Entwicklung anderer Religionen, wie zum Beispiel die des Islams, werden nicht in die Analyse miteinbezogen.

Das war von Anfang an so.'Nichtsdestotrotz verlangen immer mehr Wissenschaftler, dass sich die Ethnologie für entwicklungspolitischrelevante Fragen öffnen solle. Ob dies sinnvoll ist, welche Tätigkeitsfelder das für Ethnologen bietet und was das für die Entwicklungspolitik bedeuten könnte, wird in dieser Arbeit erörtert.
