Il s'agit d'un hommage raisonné aux nombreux artistes, souvent anonymes, que…d'aucuns crurent bon, sans préliminaire, de taxer de « primitifs ». Il offre des photos qui rayonnent d'une beauté plastique, aussi bien intrigantes et menaçantes, qu'attirantes et séduisantes. L'expression des masques est très directe, leur reproduction pourra émouvoir le spectateur mais aussi l'effrayer, voire parfois le choquer ; au minimum, elle l'interpellera. Dans bien des cas, African Faces est aussi une confrontation avec le traitement de la matière et des surfaces. Les vues de détail, aussi fortes que passionnantes, font penser à l'oeuvre de certains matiéristes occidentaux, comme l'Espagnol Antoni Tàpies et le Français Jean Fautrier. Elles toucheront plus d'un spectateur et amateur d'art moderne et contemporain. Cette approche inhabituelle s'éloigne sciemment de la photographie muséale traditionnelle, sans pour autant nier sa fonction dans un contexte scientifique.
