Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. On the reconstitution of a body, death, translation, and editingThis first monograph on artist and filmmaker Nicole Miller focuses on a single sculpture by the artist: Michael in Black (2018). This book brings together a cohort of writers and other artists through newly commissioned texts and works for the page, as well as republished texts and images that exist as their own whole. Some texts hinge on the sculpture, others are tangents. The book's texts and images build on each other, functioning as a prism for the publication's subject.Michael in Black (2018) is a bronze cast of Michael Jackson's kneeling figure, poured from a mold made directly from his body around 1986. This talismanic object comprises myriad aspects of celebrity and image: the objecthood of the performer, the potency and perversity of objects, death, and grief. This sculpture is an outlier in Miller's work, though it excavates some concerns she has similarly articulated in moving image: her recurring interest in the self-performance of her film subjects; the dehumanizing effects of the mass gaze; the celebrity as a host object for contemporary projections; the tactility of film, the sculptural qualities of editing; and the potential for self-storytelling to reconstitute an individual's wholeness.

People bear witness to these processes every day, actively and passively, in the flesh and on-screen. But bodies are also unruly: they desire and shapeshift and betray. This oscillation between the realities of mortal progression and everything that transpires in those indeterminate zones serves as the basis for the visceral practice of Swiss artist Shahryar Nashat (born 1975).This monograph surveys Nashat's artistic output of the last eight years. The book is copublished by Kunsthalle Basel and Swiss Institute, where Nashat had solo exhibitions. But, while the two exhibitions are the occasion for publishing this book, the contents here far surpass them: twelve of Nashat's works made between 2012 and 2020 are examined across six essays and one conversation, each of which forges a new reading of what is at stake in the artist's oeuvre.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A catalog for an exhibition of the latest chapter in Miriem Bennanis CAPS film project. This first monographic book on the New York-based artist Meriem Bennani is built around her ongoing filmic project CAPS. Life on the CAPS is the latest chapter in the trilogy, set in a supernatural, dystopian future surrounding a fictional island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Layering live-action footage and computer-generated animation, Bennani adapts editing techniques that evoke documentary film, science fiction, phone footage, music videos, and reality TV. Her solo exhibition at the Renaissance Society marks the debut of this work considering what it is to live in a state of limbo. The first of the books two parts focuses on the making of the work in the exhibition and features aspects of Bennanis process, her inspirations, and research around the diverse worlds of island societies, science fiction, and vernacular music. This section will also feature essays by the writers Emily LaBarge and Elvia Wilk, along with a conversation with writer and curator Omar Berrada. The second part is rooted firmly in the world of CAPS and includes conversations with Bennanis cast of motley characters, as well as a piece of fan fiction by the writer Anand Balakrishnan. Paperback. Condizione: VG. Glossy BW-illustrated wraps with white lettering. 279 pp. Mainly color illustrations. "This catalogue, accompanying the New Museum exhibition Here and Elsewhere, presents the work of over 45 artists who share roots in the Arab world and a critical sensibility with regard to images and image-making. The title of the exhibition is borrowed from a 1976 film-essay by Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Gorin and Anne-Marie Miéville. Their film, Ici et ailleurs, was conceived as a pro-Palestinian documentary, but evolved into a complex reflection on the ethics of representation. Taking inspiration from this film which has had a strong impact on Arab artists--Here and Elsewhere examines the role of the artist in the face of historical events. An anthology of critical texts edited by Bidoun magazine highlights the critical discussions that have animated contemporary art in the Arab world. Among the artists included are Fouad Elkoury, Hrair Sarkissian, Hassan Sharif, Anna Boghiguian, Simone Fattal, Ziad Antar and Etel Adnan."-Jacket.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. A catalog for an exhibition of the latest chapter in Miriem Bennani's CAPS film project. Meriem Bennani is a Moroccan artist who lives and works in New York. Life on the CAPS is the final chapter in her film trilogy of the same name. Set in a supernatural, dystopian future surrounding a fictional island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it is rooted in Bennani's research and reflections on the histories of island societies, biotechnology, and vernacular music. Layering live-action footage and computer-generated animation, Bennani intuitively adapts editing techniques that evoke documentary film, science fiction, phone footage, music videos, and reality TV. Her one-person exhibition at the Renaissance Society marked the debut of this personal, electric yet melancholic consideration of what it is to live in a state of limbo, and this accompanying book captures the film through a combination of still images and selections from a transcript of the film. Enacting a variety of cunning shifts, Life on the CAPS moves fluidly from the imaginary to the geopolitical and ranges from the microscopic scale of DNA to the global eye of surveillance. At the same time, it engages with the power of individual experience as well as the power of collectivity while building on an emotive, formal experimentation that refutes boundaries. This volume includes transcripts of conversations between Meriem Bennani and Omar Berrada, Fatima Al Quadiri and Bidoun, Amal Benzekri, and Aziz Bouyabrine.

It may also be the most important." -Peter Schjeldahl, The New YorkerSitting in a Room highlights the recent work of New York-based artist Rachel Harrison (born 1966), who takes a porous, hybrid approach to objects both made and found. Spanning mediums that include sculpture, drawing, photography and painting, Harrison's nimble, layered method has always escaped easy categorization. Abstraction is shot through with vernacular references to jarring, often comic effect, as formalist concerns are forced to vie with rogue elements from the outside world.Published in conjunction with her exhibition at the Astrup Fearnley Museet, this volume-which takes its name from a seminal work of sound art by Alvin Lucier-documents the show's distinctive format, with each gallery conceived as a specific room. From Sculpture Court to Town Square, Gym, Living Room and Cabinet, the exhibition places the viewer in contexts both intimate and public, and the original essays commissioned here expand and deepen those trajectories. Designed by Joseph Logan in close collaboration with the artist, this richly illustrated volume includes Harrison's own photography of Sitting in a Room and reflects her unique approach to the making of both exhibitions and the catalogs that outlast them.
