Clemente Merlo (Napoli 1879-Milano 1960), laureatosi a Pavia con Carlo Salvioni, insegnò a Pisa dal 1907 al 1948. Nel 1920 succedette al maestro nella direzione del Vocabolario dei dialetti della Svizzera Italiana e nel 1924 fondò la rivista L'Italia dialettale, che diresse sino al vol. XXIII (1959), alle cui bozze attendeva la sera prima di spegnersi. Negli studi di dialettologia e linguistica italiana ha lasciato un'impronta durevole, con la rivista non meno che coi propri scritti. La ristampa anastatica li ripropone ora indicizzati, come strumento imprescindibile per gli studi di dialettologia italiana e linguistica romanza. Questo terzo volume raduna gli scritti merliani non di lessico relativi a varietà romanze fuori dell'Italo-Romània, cui si aggiungono quelli sulle lingue classiche.
