The inspiration of the sailing ship for the artist, manifest in the great marine paintings of four hundred years, is part of the adventure too. So are the excitement and love inspired by the sailing ship in ordinary people, which created the demand for innumerable simple prints of ships throughout the age of sail. Captain Donald Macintyre has written a historical record of four centuries, from the first circumnavigation of the world to the virtual disappearance of the square~rigged ship. This is followed by a selection of contemporary writings of many nations, from 1520 to 1914 ( Francisco Antonio Pigafetta, William Bourne, Sir Francis Drake the Younger, Don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, Gerrit de Veer, Willem Cornelison Schouten, Thomas Heywood, A. Richer, George Lord Anson, Louis de Bougainville, Captain James Cook, Horatio Viscount Nelson, Captain Isaac Hull USN, Richard Dana, Captain H. A. Chippendale USN, Basil Lubbock, Basil Greenhill CBE, Joseph Conrad, etc.), each piece showing an important aspect of the age of sail, the whole combining with over three hundred beautiful illustrations to give a comprehensive picture of the sailing ship experience. Captain Macintyre traces the development of sails, rigging and hull design, from the caravel, carrack and galleon to the clipper epoch, when the sailing ship became a thing of visual and functional perfection; and beyond to the autumn of the age of sail, to the great steel~hulled four and five~masted barques and barquentines, which had a strange beauty of their own.' He tells the story of maritime exploration and the establishment of commerce : a story of friendly or hostile competition among nations sharing the common experience of the struggle against the sea. Adventure, in the ordinary sense of dramatic and exciting episodes, fills the history of sail and has received an extraordinary amount of eyewitness documentation. The selection of contemporary documents in this volume unfolds a stirring tale of storms, shipwrecks and fights, of famous ships and the men who sailed in them. It shows, as nothing else can, what life in sailing ships was really like. It relives great moments of discovery or despair, such as the first rounding of Cape Horn, or the last voyage of Willem Barents in his brave and futile search for the Northeast Passage, ennobled by the courage and dignity of a crew lost among ice and polar bears in the dark, dreaded Arctic winter. It evokes the brutality of life at sea, but also its warmer, more humorous side. After the horrors of Anson's voyage it is a relief to read of Bougainville's reception at Tahiti and the meeting of Cook's sailors with the nymphs of Nootka Sound. The odyssey of the human spirit is ever present in The Adventure of Sail, from the perceptive introduction by the famous modern sailing man and boat designer, Uffa Fox, to the highly.

Aggiungi al carrello4to. [2], 38, [14] leaves, w/ 38 featuring leaf numbers, on thick gray paper stock. With 49 mounted original silver gelatin photographs, including 30 sized 5 x 7 in., nine sized 5.5 x 3.4 in., and ten sized 4.4 x 2.75, with original captions slips now perished, and listed below identifying locales. Contemporary stamped brown clo…th, decoration & ruling in green on front cover (minor scuffing, edgewear), still a VG exemplar from the library of Richard Montgomery's family, and former Klahhane Club member. This excellent photo album captures an important early ascent by the Klahhane Club, a hiking and mountaineering group founded originally by Port Angeles newspaper editor and owner, Edward Webster and colleagues in 1915 to encourage the exploration and appreciation of the Olympic Mountains, and Olympic National Forest. With Ed Halberg as one of the leaders, the Klahhane Club began their trip in the Low Divide area trekking towards the headwaters of the Elwha River to Queets Basin, and onto Humes Glacier. Permanent camp was made in Queets Basin, instead of the Elwha Basin where the Seattle Mountaineers were camping for their ascent on Mount Olympus in 1920. They then climbed from the foot of Humes Glacier, and then took the new and seldom traveled roude down the Blue Glaciers (also known as the Forked Glacer), one of the most rugged in the Olympics. The third and last section of the climb out of the Hoh Valley started with an ascent to the Solduck-Hoh Divide, then to the Seven Lakes, Bogachiel Peak, and down the Canyon Creek Trail. Olympus Mountain expedition photo albums are exceedingly scarce, and very few, especially in comparison to Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, and Mount Hood photo albums. Perished captions with added historic notes tied to the photographs are listed in original order as below:p. 2 - Klahhane Lodge which later burned down, converted from the former Louie Williams' cabin, and then leased from the US Forest Servicep. 3 - Elwha Snow Finger above the North Fork Quinault Route to Mount Olympus.p. 5 - Crossing the Elwha Riverp. 6 - Queets Basin at the foot of the Humes Glacier on the southeast side of Mount Olympusp. 7 - Crossing Humes Glacierp. 9 - Climbing party seated on Northwest Peak of Olympusp. 11 - View of High Divide and Seven Lakes Basinp. 13 - Crossing Elwha River on a logP. 14 - Crossing glacierp. 15 - Upper Humes Glacierp. 16 - Shot from upper Humes Glacier of Olympus with snowy Mt. Olympus p. 38 - Climbers (probably Herb Wood, Vern Samuelson, Tom Newton and Herb Crisler) from below making approach to Middle Peak of Mt. Olympus, at the time only 15 names had been registered for that ascent. Newton was later killed in a construction accident on Grand Coulee Dam. The climb featured 24 in total, including Prof. Ranum of Cornell, Hugh Ralph Lutz, Robert Trumbull, O. Benson of Chicago, and others. Webster is perhaps best remembered for his fishing and hunting expeditions, and published his "Fishing in the Olympics" (1923).
