Die Lyrik der Bilderfindung, die Empfänglichkeit für Brauch und Volkstum, die schwerelose Eleganz seiner Zeichenkunst lassen Neureuther zum Hauptrepräsentanten der romantischen Illustrationskunst in Deutschland werden. Die hier vorgelegten Werke sind die Zeugnisse seines Schaffens, in denen die spezifischen Merkmale seiner Zeichenkunst am reinsten hervortreten. In den Gesprächen mit Eckermann äußert sich Goethe 1831 über den jungen Neureuther: "In der Kunst ist mir nicht leicht ein erfreulicheres Talent vorgekommen als das von Neureuther. Es beschränkt sich selten ein Künstler auf das, was er vermag, die meisten tun mehr als sie können und gehen gar zu gern über den Kreis hinaus, den die Natur ihrem Talent gesetzt hat. Von Neureuther jedoch läßt sich sagen, daß er über seinem Talente stehe. Die Gegenstände aus allen Reichen der Natur sind ihm geläufig, er zeichnet ebensowohl Gründe, Felsen und Bäume, wie Tiere und Menschen. Erfindung, Kunst und Geschmack besitzt er im hohen Grade, und indem er eine solche Fülle in leichten Randzeichnungen gewissermaßen vergeudet, scheint er mit seinen Fähigkeiten zu spielen und geht auf den Beschauer das Behagen über, welches die bequeme freie Spende eines reichen Vermögens immer zu begleiten pflegt. In Randzeichnungen hat es niemand zu der Höhe gebracht wie er, und selbst das große Talent von Albrecht Dürer war ihm darin weniger ein Muster als eine Anregung." Die Idee, eine Reihe von Balladen Johann Wolfgang von Goethes in der Art von Randzeichnungen zu illustrieren, mag Neureuther aus dem von Dürer und Cranach geschmückten Gebetbuch des Kaisers Maximilian 1. geschöpft haben, das durch die 1808 erschienene lithographische Ausgabe von Johann Nepomuk Strixner bekannt wurde, das Neureuther in München aber auch selbst einsehen konnte. Die ersten Vorzeichnungen sandte der Künstler 1829 an Goethe. Illustrationsversuche seiner Werke durch zeitgenössische Künstler beurteilte Goethe stets kritisch, manchmal geradezu empfindlich. Umso bedeutsamer ist es, wenn er schon zu den ersten Vorzeichnungen an Neureuther schreibt: "Sie haben dem lyrisch-epischen Charakter der Ballade einen glücklich bildenden Ausdruck zu finden gewußt, der wie eine Art Melodie jedes einzelne Gedicht auf die wundersamste Weise begleitet und durch eine ideelle Wirklichkeit der Einbildungskraft neue Richtungen eröffnet." Unter dem ermunternden Einfluß Goethes arbeitete Neureuther schnell und voller Inspiration. 1829/30 werden die Entwürfe für die ersten vier, insgesamt 37 Blatt umfassenden Hefte abgeschlossen und auf Steinplatten übertragen. Einen günstigen Vertrag mit dem Verlag Cotta vermittelt Goethe. 1839 folgt ein abschließendes fünftes Heft. Eine zusammenfassende Gesamtausgabe erschien 1855. Die Folge Baierische Gebirgslieder mit Bildern ist etwa gleichzeitig, vielleicht schon etwas früher als die Randzeichnungen zu Goethe's Balladen und Romanzen entstanden. Neureuther hatte zeit seines Lebens ein offenes Auge für das Leben, die Bräuche und das Schaffen des einfachen Volkes. Das Schützenfest des Titelblattes, die Szenen von der Alm, die Welt der Berge,der Sennerinnen und Jäger, wie es seine Bilder schildern, geben Eindrücke von erlebnisreichen?Ausflügen in die Alpen wieder. Neureuther knüpft in den Gebirgsliedern wie in den Randzeichnungen zwar an den klassizistischen Umrißstich an, vermeidet aber dessen Strenge und verschmilzt eine Fülle von Blumen, Ranken, Figuren, Fabelwesen und Landschaften zu üppigen Bildern, in denen das Ornament meist dominiert und die er Arabesken nennt. Grundsätzlich folgt seine Zeichnung den zu illustrierenden Texten, vermag diese aber in ihrer einfühlsamen Bilderwelt durch neue Dimensionen zu überhöhen. gutes Exemplar, ordentlich, * Verlag: Unterschneidheim : Uhl * Bindung: das Buch hat Überformat und kann nur als Päckchen versendet werden (5.90¤, innerhalb Deutschland).
