Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the history of monastic and conventual institutions in Great Britain from 1818 to 1870. It focuses on a series of inquiries and legislative interventions aimed at regulating Roman Catholic charities and property. The author argues that the increase of these institutions, many with property held under secret trusts, led to legal battles as parties attempted to resolve disputes in the courts of Rome. Despite an 1860 act meant to address the problem, the author contends that issues persisted and that further inquiries were warranted. The book discusses the broader context of the laws against mortmain, meant to prevent the indefinite accumulation of property by corporations, and draws parallels with the history of these institutions in continental Europe. It ultimately questions the compatibility of the growth of these institutions with social welfare and national progress.
