Book size - 7 4.5 inches. pp. eng. frontis + xii + 328 and eng. frontis + iv + 326, all edges gilt, hardback in publisher's cloth. Book condition - Good ; first engraving quite foxed, 2nd eng. less so, some occasional minor foxing in the text block, one section of the text block starting but remains secure, original yellow 'Clay' paper endpapers, front inner hinge shows splitting but front board remains secure, back inner hinge intact, inside the front cover is an engraved bookplate but with most of the writing (appears to be a presentation ) erased, affixed to the front flyleaf is a simple printed card with the name of "Arthur Leolin Price . Moor Park, Llanbedr" ; publisher's purple cloth with blind decoration on the back, gilt title and illustration on the spine and gilt illustration and bline decoration on the front ; corners and board edges rubbed but not split, back of clean appearance with a few small marks and some fading towards the spine, back hinge shows some splitting top and bottom but recently repaired so remaining visible but sound, spine complete with ends creased and rubbed and nicked, spine colour faded from purple to mid- brown, gilt tile and decoration complete but a bit rubbed and somewhat dulled, front hinge also shows repaired splitting, front colour very patchy and faded with the gilt illustration somewhat rubbed and dulled. First published in 1847 as two separate volumes, this is a presumably slightly later issue, certainly (from the publisher's names combination) no later than 1856, with the two volumes combined in one book . The name R. N. Hutton is said to be a pseudonym of Charles Newmarch, cleric and author. Arthur Leolin Price (bookplate) was an eminent lawyer, a Queen's Counsel, not only in Britain but also in New South Wales and Bahamas, with a long and distinguished career. The book ia an account of the author's travels, starting in 1844 aboard the "Worcester" , on a journey to China and back, a journey that includes Ascencion, St Helena, Calcutta, Java, Hong Kong, Canton, Ceylon, Tuticorin [ Toothukudi ], Bombay, Aden, Egypt and Malta. A sound copy of a rare book, with no other copies, not even print-on-demand, for sale online at the time of this listing.
