July 18, 1956. Matboard measures 13 1/2" x 18 1/2." Cartoon panel (size of mat window) measures 10 1/4" x 11 1/2." Art and matboard are very clean and intact with minimal age wear. "Showboat" is strung between the ship's two funnels or chimneys. A man holding a collapsed tent that says, "Big Top," waves farewell to the ship. This cartoon commemorates the closing of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus for that year. Newton Pratt (1901-1985) was an American cartoonist and engineer. He was The Sacramento Bee's editorial cartoonist from 1938-1971. Pratt was also a three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for his work at the newspaper. Pratt was succeeded by Dennis Renault (b. 1936), who would become another longtime and accomplished cartoonist at The Sac Bee. Inscribed by Author(s).
