From dust jacket: Few people knew more about the history of human conflict than Professor Hugh Nibley. But on June 6, 1944, at Utah Beach, he learned more about war than he had gleaned from all the books he'd read combined. General Mazwell Taylor assigned Sergeant Nibley to educate the officers of the 101st Airborne about warfare. But it was the professor himself who received an education while fighting as a member of the most legendary unit of the United States Army. Hugh Nibley was indeed an unlikely soldier. His background was in history, and his passion was for languages (he could speak at least sixteen). In fact, he had already earned his Ph.D. when he enlisted in the army. Yet this college professor from a small liberal arts college somehow found himself in Germany, in the thick of World War II, having crossed paths with Albert Einstein, Gertrude Stein, and (possibly) even Adolf Hitler himself. As an intelligence sergeant, Hugh Nibley knew about the invasions of D-Day and Market-Garden before most of the officers in his division did. As a solder, he stormed Utah Beach and flew into Holland in a glider. Told primarily in Hugh Nibley's won words, this unique memoir grew out of countless hours of interviews between Hugh and his son Alex.
