Considered by the author to be an entirely new work from his dictionary published in two quarto volumes in 1795, "the articles being either considerably enlarged, or entirely rewritten, and in every instance being adapted to the present improved state of Chemical Science". Nicholson was the founder in 1797 of the 'Journal of Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and the Arts', which was the first independent scientific journal to be published in Great Britain.
